Overview

The Director of Operations manages and directs dairy production activities to assure plant production, safety and quality standards are met. The Director of Operations is accountable for the associated safety, quality, productivity, and financial targets across the plant operation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages plant production operations and establishes production priorities to ensure product is produced efficiently and within cost parameters while maintaining company quality and sanitation standards.
  • Responsible for operations across UHT and ESL. Mastery of Pasteurized Milk Ordinance and operation of a dairy manufacturing.
  • Coordinates production activities with procurement, sales, distribution, maintenance, and quality control activities to obtain optimum production and utilization of manpower, machines, and equipment.
  • Oversight of operations personnel. Determine and allocate staffing needs.
  • Assist in setting operations budgets for cost control. Establish and manage the department's budget to ensure financial goals are met or exceeded.
  • Able to adjust accordingly and react effectively to changing market demands.
  • Ensure the department's activities remain in or exceed the standards and specifications set by Quality Assurance.
  • Support and adhere to the Company's SQF program. Maintain and implement up to date SQF procedures and communicate with staff on a regular basis. Provide leadership for SQF and enforce the rules in accordance with the established program.
  • Reviews and analyzes production, quality control, maintenance. and operational reports to determine causes of non-conformity with product specifications or operating and production problems. Compiles and analyzes raw product cost data to identify and minimize excessive costs.
  • Engage and interact with all personnel on a regular basis assisting them with their concerns and questions. Manages directly or through subordinate personnel, plant employees so that effective management and union working relationships are sustained. Sit in on hearings to resolve grievances.
  • Drive key performance indicators to all levels within the organization and participate in making recommendations for necessary changes to enhance the business objectives.
  • Manage employee's performance through establishing expectations, holding people accountable and developing the understanding of the sense of urgency in addressing Operational needs.
  • Partner with other departments regarding the resolution of ongoing problems, the implementation of new procedures or processes, the injection of new products or product lines, and the development of new plan and designs.
  • Ensure good business communication practices are engaged at all levels to ensure key stakeholders are well informed and can appropriately respond.
  • Ensure all process changes, equipment changes or product changes are understood by all employees in a timely fashion.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, Operations Management or Food Science Technology with emphasis on manufacturing operations.
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of management experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities outlined.
  • Strong understanding of equipment and processes, including HTST pasteurization process, membrane system filtration (UHT & ESL).
  • Working knowledge of union contracts and obligations, and ability to work effectively with bargaining unit employees.
  • Strong working knowledge of general business concepts & practices, especially as they relate to dairy business.
  • Strong working knowledge of dairy industry production practices, processes, regulations, and equipment.
  • Ability to demonstrate professional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to make and implement personnel decisions critical to subordinates, pay and productivity levels and employment statuses.
  • Capacity to manage various projects and work to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent negotiation and leadership skills.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, and other job-related software applications.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
