About the team

For this Assistant Head of School/Assistant Principal, Academics position, you'll be working for our high school in Wilmington, Delaware called Freire Charter School Wilmington (8th-12th Grade): Freire is all about Graduation x 2 – graduation from high school and from college. We challenge our students to achieve higher than they ever have before, and we give them the support they need to get there, including individualized college counseling. The Class of 2023 received acceptances into 81 unique colleges and universities and more than $10M in scholarship award offers. This success is possible because the Freire Wilmington community is a true family, where students and teachers work together to build the future each student wants and deserves.

What you'll do

Reporting to the Head of School, the Assistant Head of School, Academics will be responsible for assisting in the day to day operations of the school, with a special emphasis on instructional leadership. As the Assistant Head of School, Academics, you'll drive the development and growth of our amazing educators so that our classrooms are spaces of joy, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Responsibilities
  • Develop excellence in all instructional staff by conducting formal and informal classroom observations and coaching support.
  • Shape and analyze data to improve school operations and student success.
  • Build a culture of instructional excellence and continuous improvement characterized by standards-based, problem-based instruction, collaboration, and a relentless focus on maximizing student learning and positive experience.
  • Support teachers with suggestions and strategies to improve curriculum, instruction, assessment, and classroom management,
  • Foster a joyful school climate, including the thoughtful adherence to the Student Code of Conduct and resolution of student conflict.
  • Assist with daily operations, including student arrival and dismissal, celebrating success, scheduling, attendance, facility management, cafeteria management, etc.

Minimum requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher
  • 3-5 years of K-12 public or charter teaching experience, particularly in high-needs schools
  • Prior leadership experience (e.g. teacher-leader experience: mentor teacher, department chair, grade-level chair, extra-curricular leadership; school leadership experience: instructional coach, director of curriculum of instruction, assistant principal or principal, director of student activities, etc.)
  • Superior grasp of effective instructional methods that allow students to do the intellectual heavy lifting
  • A strong ability to develop relationships and work with various members of our school community, from students to teachers to heads of school.
