Outside Sales Engineer
Upper Peninsula of MI and Eastern WI
Position Description –
As a professional Outside Sales Representative of GPM, Inc. you are responsible for selling the products that GPM represents through our distribution network, in addition to selling the service and repair capabilities of GPM, Inc. You are directly responsible for maintaining the current account base, along with growing the sales territory with new customers. You will be expected to make sales calls to established accounts in addition to cold calls to new, potential customers to GPM, Inc.
Qualifications –
The ideal candidate for the position shall have:
Education:
- Engineering or associate degree in a technical field
- Military training in mechanical equipment
- 4-year B.A. with extensive background in power and/or rotating equipment
Required Experience and Skills:
- 5 years rotating equipment experience
- Excellent knowledge of rotating equipment, pumps, motors, mechanical seals, fans, etc.
- Knowledge of mining, pulp and paper, power generation, oil seed processing, ethanol, and other industrial/commercial/institutional markets
- Strong communication skills utilizing computer, phone, and in person
- Unquestioned moral and ethical behavior
Responsibilities –
- Developing and maintaining customer relationships to drive sales
- Developing sales leads and closing identified business opportunities
- Staying current with CRM updates
- Developing and updating sales outlooks and reports
- Learning products and sales tools
- Various other duties as they are required in a dynamic business environment
Reporting –
The Outside Sales Representative position reports directly to the Strategic Business Development Manager.
Conditions –
The primary location includes Wisconsin River Valley/Eastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Most of the time will be used with direct customer interaction in the field with office support from Duluth, MN. Occasional travel and overnights will be required to cover territory along with some travel demands to accommodate training schedule. Evening or weekend hours may also be necessary as required to meet the customers’ needs.
Location –
Home office primarily – with visits to Duluth to interconnect with our staff as necessary.

- Properly manage time between your home office and in-field plant visits, communicating with customers and selling represented products and services.
Other (Physical, Mental and Visual skills) –
Frequent periods are spent standing or sitting in the same location; occasionally there may be a need to stoop or lift light objects (typically less than 50 pounds).
- Must demonstrate sufficient visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity to use computers and other equipment and the ability to communicate with a variety of people.
- Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time. Intermittent physical activity including bending, reaching and prolonged periods of sitting.
- Ability to move about and communicate with a diverse membership and employee/customer group.
- Ability to accomplish the described responsibilities through the use of computers and technology.
- Ability to work in a changing, challenging, and fast paced environment with varying stress levels.
- Outside of in territory travel, there will be occasional out of territory travel required for training, hosted sales meetings, and meetings in Duluth, MN at company headquarters.
Work Environment and Physical Demands –
Outside Sales Representative:
- Work involves daily exposure to common elements such as dirt, dust, fumes, and noise. Seasonal exposure to weather elements includes, but is not limited to, extreme temperatures and humidity.
- Work environment involves daily exposure to physical risks such as working around forklifts, chemical hazards, and operating milling equipment.
- Position requires the ability to stand, sitting frequently at a desk, walking around the plant with and without our customer; carrying/lifting packages up to 50 pounds on occasion; finger and hand dexterity to use keyboard, laboratory equipment; bending, stooping, and reaching daily.
- Vision requirements are close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception.
- Personal protective equipment, as defined by GPM Inc and your customer will be provided.
