Position Summary:
The Customs Brokerage Specialist will be responsible for managing the customs clearance process for Terra Exports' shipments, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and timely delivery of goods. This role requires a detail-oriented professional with in-depth knowledge of customs regulations, import/export processes, and the ability to handle complex documentation. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills, the ability to work under pressure, and a commitment to delivering exceptional service to both internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
Customs Clearance:
Manage the customs clearance process for imported and exported goods, ensuring compliance with all applicable customs regulations and requirements. Prepare and submit necessary documentation to customs authorities in a timely manner.Documentation Management:
Prepare, review, and verify import/export documentation, including bills of lading, commercial invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin. Ensure all documentation is accurate and complete to avoid delays in customs clearance.Regulatory Compliance:
Stay updated on changes in customs regulations, tariffs, and trade agreements that may impact the import/export process. Ensure all shipments comply with local, national, and international regulations.Vendor and Client Communication:
Communicate effectively with customs authorities, freight forwarders, carriers, and clients to resolve any issues that may arise during the customs clearance process. Provide regular updates to clients and internal teams on the status of shipments.Tariff Classification:
Accurately classify goods according to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) to determine appropriate duties and taxes. Advise internal teams on duty rates and potential cost-saving opportunities through tariff classification.Problem Resolution:
Address and resolve any issues related to customs clearance, including delays, disputes, or discrepancies in documentation. Work proactively to prevent potential problems and ensure smooth processing of all shipments.Record Keeping:
Maintain detailed records of all customs transactions, including documentation, correspondence, and payment records. Ensure records are easily accessible for audits and compliance reviews.Continuous Improvement:
Identify opportunities to improve the customs clearance process and implement best practices to enhance efficiency and reduce costs. Stay informed about industry trends and technological advancements that can benefit the customs brokerage function.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in international business, logistics, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 3+ years of experience in customs brokerage, import/export, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. customs regulations, the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), and international trade laws.
- Proficiency in customs brokerage software and tools (e.g., ACE, ABI, or similar).
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple shipments and deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with customs authorities, clients, and internal teams.
- Ability to analyze complex regulations and apply them accurately to ensure compliance.
- Licensed Customs Broker (LCB) certification is preferred but not required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the fresh produce industry or perishable goods is a plus.
- Familiarity with global shipping routes, Incoterms, and international trade practices.
- Bilingual skills (e.g., Spanish) are an advantage.
