OVERVIEW

USCRI is dedicated to providing quality multicultural mental health awareness and wellness training opportunities for volunteers and staff in various agencies working with refugees and refugee-related populations across Texas. With grant funding from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for Mental Health Awareness Training (MHAT), the goal of the program is to increase the number of lay individuals who can recognize symptoms of mental illness in adults and youth, effectively de-escalate a crisis situation, and connect individuals to appropriate community resources. To support this program, USCRI seeks qualified on-call employees to co-instruct Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training sessions (in-person and/or virtual) with USCRI’s full-time certified MHFA instructor.

This position can be based in/near any of the seven resettlement cities across TX (Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, or San Antonio) for in-person or remote trainings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Instruct or co-instruct Mental Health First Aid trainings using adult and/or youth MHFA modules.
  • Meet with the other co-instructor prior to the training to coordinate the lesson plan for the training.
  • Be present for the full duration of assigned training and instruct agreed-upon segments.
  • Collect sign-in sheets and send them to USCRI.
  • Help administer participant pre- and post-surveys.
  • Distribute incentives to each participant (provided by USCRI), if applicable.
  • Set-up and breakdown of the classroom (including virtual sessions).
  • Utilize the materials for instruction provided by Mental Health First Aid and USCRI.
  • Comply with all USCRI program and evaluation instructions.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Current certification in either or both Adult and Youth MHFA (required).
  • Experience working with health and human service organizations, including federal, state, local governments, clinics, hospitals, nonprofits, and community, ethnic, or faith-based organizations;
  • Demonstrated track record of cultural humility and experience working with international populations;
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, such as presenting material for diverse audiences;
  • Strong skillset in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint;
  • Self-starter with the ability to work well in a team, juggle multiple priorities, and meet regular deadlines;
  • Strong attention to detail; must be highly flexible;
  • Demonstrated support of USCRI’s values by exhibiting respect for others, maintenance of confidential information, and an appreciation of a multicultural workplace;
  • Dedication to the human rights of refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, and displaced people; and
  • Reliable transportation, valid US driver’s license, and active insurance policy.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

  • Satisfactory completion of USCRI’s Orientation and Training; and
  • Complete additional training as identified by supervisor or Human Resources.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity;
  • Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting and standing, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands; and
  • Occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), bending, pulling, and carrying; and
  • Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, standard measurements).
