Join a well-known, highly ranked law firm as a Collections Paralegal.

This is an in-office position working with great team members.  Need flexibility to work overtime as needed beyond a 40-hour work week. 

The firm will consider someone that Legal Assistant and/or paralegal experience. 

You will need to meet a billable hour requirement. 

To be qualified, please have bankruptcy or law firm collections experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Compliance:

Adheres to applicable laws and firm policies, including the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act and Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Account Reconciliation:

Requests updated statements of account from management or online and reconciles account balances according to procedure prior to pursuing legal action.

Case Preparation:

Prepares cases for attorney prior to court return date. Updates account balances, communicates with attorneys on actions to be taken, and prepares all related paperwork including praecipes, affidavits, and garnishment dispositions. Reviews final docket with the attorney prior to the court date.

Payment Processing:

Processes all payments on accounts and prepares transmittal memos to clients regarding payment application.

Status Reporting:

Reviews team status reports monthly. Ensures account balances and statuses are updated on each account each month for the report and coordinates actions on accounts with team attorneys.

Credit Bureau Reporting:

Prepares account information for reporting to the credit bureau and submits it to the team attorney for review.

Searches:

Performs address/asset searches through Postal Service, Accurint, DMV, and Private Investigator when necessary.

Reminder System:

Establishes and maintains a reminder system through Collection Manager (CM) and/or Outlook. Monitors all court dates and ensures that dockets are prepared for attorneys. Monitors all payment arrangements and advises attorneys if any defaults exist. Monitors all deadlines for legal action and communicates the same to attorneys.

Payoff Preparation:

Gathers account information and prepares payoffs as requested.

Ethics Compliance:

Follows ethical requirements governing attorneys as set forth by the Rules of Professional Conduct of the State. Observes confidentiality of the attorney-client relationship.

Document Composition:

Accurately composes letters, memos, and various other legal documents such as liens, promissory notes, suits, and garnishments, utilizing appropriate legal terminology and document formats. Proofreads all work to ensure complete accuracy.

Billing:

Bills time according to fee schedule policy and utilizes appropriate task codes.

Client Contact:

Maintains telephone contact with clients and delinquent homeowners as needed.

File Maintenance:

Maintains all active case files and closes files according to written CA practice group procedures.

Meetings:

Meets with both clients and delinquent homeowners regarding account resolution as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

- Some knowledge and/or understanding of collections as a specialty area of law practice.

- Highly organized with the ability to prioritize numerous tasks and complete all work assigned within prescribed deadlines.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

- Bachelor’s degree

- Years of experience will be considered in lieu of college-level education.

- Experience working in a law environment, preferably as a paralegal or legal assistant.
