Founded in 1973 as a neighborhood organization, CMOM has grown over the years into a beloved destination and resource for children, families, and educators from across the five boroughs and from around the world. The museum welcomes 350,000 visitors each year to its Upper West Side location and engages hundreds of thousands more through its outreach programs in partnership with schools, libraries, shelters, and Head Start centers throughout New York City; its touring exhibitions; and its online tools and curricula.POSITION OVERVIEWCMOM seeks a creative and collaborative museum educator and administrator to teach and help implement programs and creative curriculum focused on family and early childhood learning at the Museum. Visitors enjoy workshops, classes, and performances each week. These family programs are free with admission and offered to enhance the Museum’s exhibits and content focus areas through hands-on activities and resources.

Reporting to the Director of Public Programs, the Early Childhood Senior Coordinator helps to develop early childhood programs and co-teach lessons with a cohort of Museum Educators in collaboration with the Director of Public Programs and Senior Coordinator of Public Programs. This position requires a dynamic, self-motivated, organized, creative problem-solver and an experienced educator, with a specialty in early childhood education. The candidate should have museum or classroom teaching experience and the ability to design programs for diverse audiences across subject matter in an informative and engaging manner. This role primarily will work on drop-in activities for early childhood audiences and their caregivers in the PlayWorks exhibitions space, including artmaking, read-alouds, science experiments, and more. Our PlayWorks exhibition focuses on learning for children from infants to 4 years old; experience and comfort with very young children and families is a requirement for the role.

The Early Childhood Public Programs Coordinator reports directly to the Director of Public Programs and works in collaboration with the Senior Public Programs Coordinator and Public Programs Supervisor

Hours are Sunday-Thursday and occasionally (2-3 times a year) will be Wednesday-Sunday. Additional evenings and major holidays may be required.
 PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Provide a variety of drop-in programs and activities, including artmaking, storytelling, and facilitated play, along with movement and circle activities for visiting families and children;
  • Assist with hiring, training, and supervising part-time Museum Educators.
  • Provides feedback to early career educators and models lessons and best practices.
  • Collaborate to conceive, implement, and develop lessons and activities for onsite early childhood programs and special events.
  • Coordinate programs, develop curriculum, and adapt lesson plans for programs that will take place in PlayWorks and other exhibition spaces.
  • Assist with scheduling of Museum Educators in exhibits and program spaces.
  • Coordinate access/sensory friendly programs for family audiences.
  • Assist with staff training and professional development.
  • Collaborate with other Education and Museum staff.
  • Assist with administrative tasks including invoices, room reservations, booking confirmations, program schedules, and weekly staffing schedules.
  • Survey the Museum floor during public hours.
  • Assist with evaluation of current programs and Museum Facilitators’ performance.
  • Oversee supply inventory for PlayWorks programs and other programs as assigned.
  • Ensure that activities are effectively and safely implemented using developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Demonstrate effective problem–solving skills, patience, and flexibility.
  • Act as day of liaison for setup of guest vendors (i.e., visual artists, authors, and performers in a variety of media).
  • Other duties as assigned.
 QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working in early childhood classrooms; some museum experience preferred but not required. At least two years of professional experience.
  • Ability to assess priorities, multi-task, and work well under pressure; excellent time management, problem solving, and analytical skills.
  • Working knowledge of teaching, early childhood education, early science learning and/or artmaking for audiences from diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of Reggio Emilia, Montessori, and inquiry-based learning principles for young children. 
  • Experience with process-based artmaking and knowledge of child development for children ages 0-8, with significant experience working with children from infancy to 4 years old.
  • Experience with neurodiverse audiences or students.
  • Capacity to communicate effectively and professionally with different constituencies, verbally and in writing.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service.
  • Forward looking thinker, actively seeking opportunities and proposes solutions.
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.
  • Proficiency with Google and MS Office products, and an understanding of Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Bachelor of Arts degree in early childhood education, child development, or related field preferred
