Job DescriptionJob Description

Summary:  The Staff Accountant’s primary responsibilities include maintenance and analysis of accounting records, preparation of accounting schedules, reports and financial statements; preparation of journal entries and account reconciliations, compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and organization policies, procedures, and contracts.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:  The following reflects Burbank Housing’s definition of essential functions for this job but does not restrict the tasks that may be assigned. 

 

  1. Reconcile general ledger, sub ledger, external ledger accounts.
  2. Prepare and publish monthly financials.
  3. Review monthly financials for anomalies, investigate causes, & recommend journals.
  4. Prepare and post journals and uploads into accounting system (YARDI).
  5. Review and code check requests for numerous companies and cash accounts.
  6. Assist and execute impromptu requests for assistance.
  7. Approve invoices for payment and commit payment.
  8. Help bookkeepers with bank reconciliation-related questions.
  9. Prepare annual 1099 filing
  10. Work on agency required reports annually
  11. Support for numerous audits, tax returns, and compliance.
  12. Look over property receivable & payable for errors, check property alerts
  13. Process payables “when needed” for assigned properties; record electronic payments
  14. Assist property managers with their accounting questions and solve problem. 
  15.  Post monthly rent and Subsidy & HUD payments “when needed”
  16. Other duties as assigned.

 

Job Knowledge/Skills:

6.    Yardi experience is a plus.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.

A minimum of 3 years work experience in full-charge bookkeeping or education in related field is required.  A combination of work and education experience may be acceptable.

 

Language Skills: Ability to read, interpret, and analyze accounting records.  Ability to write business correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups and individuals.

 

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 

Reasoning Abilities: Ability to interpret and analyze accounting reports, i.e. general ledger, account detail, and trial balance. Ability to think conceptually with the accounting cycle, and understand the ultimate effect of accounting transactions.  Ability to collect data establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and make recommendations. 

 

Other Skills and Abilities: 

1.    Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, a good driving record, and automobile insurance per requirements of the State of California.

2.    Working knowledge of computer software and systems: Windows XP, Excel, Word, Outlook, web browsers. 

3.    Knowledge of YARDI accounting software a big plus

4.    Experience in real estate, affordable housing, USDA Rural Development,
