The Accounting Manager is responsible for evaluating, developing, and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures. This management role oversees Senior Accounting Analysts and Accountants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Knowledge and Compliance: Demonstrates a thorough understanding of accounting standards, regulations, corporate structures, and accounts.
  • Fixed Assets and Expenses: Oversees preparation of fixed asset details, depreciation schedules, and account roll-forwards. Reviews monthly operating expense trend reports and annual budgets, ensuring high accuracy and clear variance explanations.
  • Account Analysis and Budgeting: Reviews account trend information and annual budget data, preparing and maintaining journals of questions, responses, and action items.
  • Process Improvements: Recommends modifications to policies, procedures, and system applications to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Variance Explanations: Provides review comments on variance explanations, balance sheet account reconciliations, and financial statement preparations.
  • Financial Liaison: Acts as the primary financial liaison between operations and finance, addressing inquiries related to payroll, accounts payable, contracting, and revenue reimbursement.
  • Cross-Training: Ensures effective cross-training of responsibilities and creates workflow documentation for financial processes.
  • Policies and Procedures: Creates and supports standardized financial process and accounting procedure policies.
  • Issue Management: Manages high volume and complex issues, ensuring clerical accuracy and thorough documentation of center-specific nuances.
  • Reconciliation and Journal Entries: Reviews balance sheet account reconciliations and ensures accurate general ledger journal entries, providing clear descriptions and adhering to internal controls.
  • Error Management: Demonstrates infrequent errors, accepts accountability, and implements tools to prevent recurrence.
  • Time Management and Audits: Manages time effectively, adheres to close schedules, and provides auditor-requested information promptly.

Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Previous experience as an Accounting Manager with direct reports in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent computer skills, including accounting software (Microsoft Great Plains Dynamics preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Solid understanding of budgeting, forecasting, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong quantitative, problem-solving, and analytical skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to manage employees and multitask on large projects
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferred but not required
