Federal Agency in Minneapolis, MN is seeking a contract Paralegal/Legal Assistant to provide legal support to a financial litigation team to prepare, monitor and assist the Attorneys and other staff in high priority cases.

This contract will run for 1 base year, plus 2 option years, and will provide 40 hours per week. Office hours will be Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm.

Must be a US Citizen, and able to pass a background check.

Duties and requirements:

  • Serves as legal assistant responsible for: directly and independently supporting one and up to two Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSA). The work requires knowledge of the processes, procedures, and practices of legal assistance activities in conjunction with knowledge of clerical and administrative office skills and ability to apply these skills to increase the effectiveness of the assigned AUSA. Completes variable aspects of recurring legal documents in conformance with the rules governing their style and format.
  • The requested services will be to perform a variety of legal assistance work to include preparing and processing legal documents and materials, researching case files, verifying legal citations, and compiling case information in specialized formats for trial presentations. The work directly affects the legal operations of the office.
  • Using original and online legal resources, verifies citations and statutory references contained in legal documents. Ensures citations are complete and consistent with source material.
  • The requested services will be to perform a variety of legal assistance work to include preparing and processing legal documents and materials, researching case files, verifying legal citations, and compiling case information in specialized formats for trial presentations. The work directly affects the legal operations of the office. Ensures proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and ability to learn quickly and follow detailed instructions are extremely important. Works and interacts professionally and effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Ability to meet established deadlines and work as a team player in a professional office. Skill in meeting and dealing with people in a courteous and tactful manner. Demonstrated ability to review a wide variety of documents, both legal and non-legal documents, including motions and briefs, and a variety of legal correspondence.

Provides a variety of direct clerical and administrative support assistance services.

Typical assignments include:

1. Receives visitors and telephone callers. Furnishes requested information concerning pending and closed matters and cases, functions, and general procedures of the office. Determines which matters should be referred to the AUSA and the urgency of the matter.

2. Establishes and maintains a variety of files. Searches legal reference files for information needed by AUSAs in conducting interviews and preparing correspondence. Assembles exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents from file material. Separates, screens, selects, assembles, and organizes files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository in accordance with established procedures.

3. Performs docketing duties such as opening, updating, and closing cases through use of the automated case tracking system. As necessary, searches database for required information.

4. Enters information into various databases and monitors for continued necessity.

5. Maintains calendar of assigned active cases. Tracks filing, hearing, and trial dates, and scheduling conferences and interviews. Develops and maintains suspense system for ongoing cases and informs the AUSA of pending dates and deadlines. Maintains calendar(s) of the AUSA(s), scheduling appointments, interviews, and conferences, and provides reminders of commitments and court appearances.
