Title: Family Planning Clinician

FLSA Status: Part-to Full Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt

Department: Clinic Operations

Reports To: Clinic Manager, VP of Patient Services, Medical Director

GENERAL SUMMARY

In that context, the Family Planning Clinician will provide efficient and sensitive full range of sexual and reproductive health care to the well patient. Provide services in line with the PPSO expanding scope of services to include increasing levels of primary care. A moderate to high degree of complexity is involved. The Family Planning Clinician operates from established, evidence-based procedures and protocols, and will frequently need to make independent decisions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinic Operation

  • Facilitate patient flow and clinic services to achieve an efficiently functioning clinic.
  • Interview patients briefly to identify specific medical problems and to answer patient questions.
  • Serve as birth control counselor and medication prescriber and dispenser.
  • Explain medical problems, treatments and prescriptions to patients.
  • Arrange referrals as necessary.
  • Carry out patient follow-up by scheduling return appointments for problems or abnormal lab results, calling patients back when necessary, and answering patient questions.
  • Maintain patient medical records in good order utilizing standard language and abbreviations and following accepted medical standards for charting using standard affiliate EHR workflows
  • Assist management with new employee training.

Medical Services

  • Actively participates in the delivery of reproductive health services including abortion care.
  • Perform annual physical exams for women.
  • Prescribe all FDA approved contraceptive methods available at the affiliate and medications required for treatment under PPHS scope of care
  • Diagnose, treat, counsel, educate and follow-up medical conditions including sexually transmitted infections in accordance with established medical protocol; refer as needed
  • Participate in the training of technical skills as assigned such as phlebotomy and ultrasound.
  • Ensure that all drugs are kept in a locked location unless a physician, pharmacist, registered nurse, or nurse practitioner is present
  • Counsel patients on the use, risks, benefits and side effects of any medications prescribed and ensure a drug information fact sheet is given to the client.
  • Dispense new medications to patients and review and approve repeat, non-judgmental dispensing by designated, trained staff.
  • Perform laboratory procedures e.g. hemoglobin, urinalysis, and wet mounts.
  • Maintain emergency equipment and supplies.
  • Provide patient centered, quality care and customer service at all times.
  • Perform basic laboratory functions (CLIA – moderate complexity)
  • Work cooperatively with staff, medical director, and administration.
  • Work within the policies and procedures of Planned Parenthood as approved by the Medical Director.
  • Accept individual and joint responsibility for clinic efforts to comply with all organizational quality assurance guidelines and pertinent government regulations including OSHA, CLIA and HIPAA.

Productivity: Participate in health center efforts to achieve established goals for productivity.

Revenue Cycle: Participate in health center/affiliate efforts to achieve established revenue cycle goals.

Customer Service:

  • Adhere to affiliate goals and policies on professionalism, wait time in-clinic and on the phone, and the system for addressing client complaints.
  • Provide high quality customer service at all times.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This job is not supervisory in nature.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Position requires Oregon licensure as a nurse practitioner, certified nurse midwife or physician’s assistant. Experience in supervising and instructing support staff is also desirable. CPR certification is required and can be obtained after employment.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical journals, medical reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the medical community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Requires advanced ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Work requires continuously using problem analysis, decision making, independent judgment, the use of discretion, creativity, mentoring, counseling, teamwork, interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and evaluation skills.
  • Professional nursing skills including an advanced skill in charting efficiencies and requirements is necessary.
  • Job involves frequent interruptions and work is performed in a clinical environment.
  • Commitment to the mission, goals and philosophy of Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon.

Availability

During peak activity periods work in excess of 8 hours per day and/or 40 hours per week. Job will involve evening hours and possibly weekend hours as well as early morning meetings. Job may require evening and weekend work.
