Positions are currently available for our front office Adoption Counselor/ Front Office staff. Must be available either Saturday and/or Sunday every week. Hours are flexible but fall in the range of 8:30am – 7:00pm, Monday thru Friday; 8:30am – 5:00pm on Saturday and 10:00am – 5:00pm on Sunday. With our doors open 7 days a week, we strive to create a positive and welcoming environment for both animals, potential adopters and community at large.

We are seeking a passionate and empathetic candidates who enjoy working as part of a team, with the public in a fast paced and diverse environment. Duties include assisting with adoptions, animal education with the public, answering phone calls/emails, scheduling intakes, and a variety of activities including light maintenance of the office area. The qualified candidates will have exceptional customer service skills and organization abilities. They must be comfortable in a noisy, distracting environment and able to multitask. They must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. The qualified candidate will be flexible, enthusiastic and energetic. Must be able to work with all species of domestic animals and some wildlife.

  • Greeting and interacting with shelter visitors, assessing their preferences and needs for adopting an animal.
  • Providing information about available animals, their personalities, and any special requirements.
  • Conducting adoption counseling sessions to match potential adopters with animals that suit their lifestyle and preferences.
  • Assisting in the completion of adoption paperwork and ensuring all necessary documentation is accurately filled out.
  • Conducting intakes of animals coming into the shelter.
  • Collaborating with the shelter team to maintain a clean and organized environment.
  • Keeping up-to-date records of adoption statistics and ensuring accurate data entry.
  • Demonstrated experience in dealing with sensitive topics like euthanasia and surrenders, and the ability to provide compassionate guidance and support in such situations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, especially when conveying sensitive information or counseling individuals facing tough decisions.
  • The capacity to thrive in an ever-changing, fast-paced shelter environment where no two days are the same. The ability to remain calm and composed under pressure.
  • Proficiency in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques to handle challenging conversations with adopters, volunteers, or other shelter stakeholders.
  • Collaborative and teamwork-oriented, capable of working closely with colleagues from various backgrounds and roles within the shelter.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with diverse personalities and backgrounds.
  • Empathetic and patient nature, especially when dealing with potential adopters who may have questions or concerns.
  • Knowledge of different animal breeds, behaviors, and care requirements.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and varying shifts as required by the shelter's schedule.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications and data entry.
  • Requires contact with the public that involves a high degree of courtesy.
  • Requires ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, including telephone, computer systems and face-to-face interactions.
  • Requires the ability to work under pressure and under noisy conditions around animals.

Reporting Relationship

Reports directly to Office Lead and Shelter Manager.
