Living Skills in the Schools is a growing organization in search of Mental Health Professionals who want to broaden their clinical role to support school aged youth in making healthy decisions and preventing risky behaviors around poor coping skills, unhealthy relationships and most importantly, teen substance use. We are seeking a mental health professionals who will work within the Palm Beach County School District, providing age appropriate psychoeducation around mental health, social emotional learning skills, the disease of addiction and substance specific dangers. Opportunities are available to work with either elementary school aged or high school aged children.

The Prevention Coordinators work in conjunction with School Behavioral health teams, Co-located Counselors, and School Professionals to educate, prevent, triage, and intervene in all psycho-social aspects of disease prevention (substance abuse/mental health). In this role, the Mental Health Professional will apply behavioral principles to address lifestyle and health risk issues and provide referral and intervention strategies with school partners as deemed necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs a combination, but not necessarily all of the following duties

  1. Leads in, participates, and/or coordinates the delivery of substance abuse/mental health programming /training/workshops to enhance protective factors, reduce risk factors, and prevent chronic disease in students 6th-12th grade.

  2. Promote and Integrate Prevention and Referral Services around the school community’s Behavioral Health and substance abuse

  3. Participates in daily review of programming as well as clinical assessments, referrals, and protocols and procedures.

  4. Establishes partnership and funding sources such as Family Engagement Programming, 21st Century, and PTA/PTO organizations to expand the program

  5. Assess, Promote, and Assist School Professionals in identifying, and managing mental health, substance abuse, and psychosocial concerns in the community setting.

  6. Support School Professionals where needed with recommendations concerning student disclosures or requests for access to support

  7. Assist in the detection of “at-risk” students to prevent disease progression

  8. Monitor and Coordinate the delivery of prevention programming, including linking students, families, and school professionals within the school setting and outside community resources as well

  9. Document student referrals, linkage, etc.

  10. Participate in morning meetings to present case studies as they are applied to school services

  11. Participate in data collection, evaluation, and reporting for various stakeholders as needed to demonstrate the impact and outcomes of programs. Participate where asked as a research assistant with Florida Atlantic University

  12. Function as a member of an interdisciplinary team

  13. Attend meetings, training, and other work-related events as neede

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position may provide supervision to qualifying interns

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

 

  • Master’s Degree

  • Licensed ( LCSW, LMFT, LMHC)or Mental health or Masters Level Public Health Professional or registered intern

  • 3 -5 years experience as a social worker/mental health professional in a community or school behavioral health environment

  • Proficiency in the identification of Substance abuse/misuse and mental health disorders

  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in prevention programming, risk factors/protective factors, and interventions relevant to behavioral health conditions

  • Ability to make quick and accurate clinical decisions and assessments

  • Care management skills and knowledge of local resources for outside referrals

  • Skilled in universal and targeted prevention and intervention programming and services including small and large groups

  • Ability to collect impact data in a way that helps the organization improve the delivery of services

  • Liaison skills

  • Experience in working in underserved communities and schools and with those youth and families experiencing mental illness and substance abuse

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred (read, write, speak)

 

Licensure/Certification

Language Skills

 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret data, professional journals, and relevant research or regulations. Ability to write business correspondence, reports, and professional notes. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups including (school professionals, families, students, etc.) Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred (read, write, speak)

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Synthesize complex or diverse information. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of evidence-based methods or deal with abstract and concrete variables. Ability to interpret situations, characteristics, and behavior and respond appropriately.
