POSITION SUMMARY

Supports the engineering activities of the Cooperative by performing power line assessment activities and engineering field operations required to support the design, construction, inspection, maintenance and accounting of overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities of the Cooperative by applying technical knowledge, sound engineering judgment, and skill to ensure that the system meets the present and future requirements.

Design and engineer electric distribution facilities. Prepares electronic staking sheets to comply with specifications and policies. Completes the staking of assigned work plan projects in a timely, efficient manner to ensure the work plan and budget of the cooperative are accomplished.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, and prepares electronic staking sheets for short/long range work plan items.
  • Act as liaison between members and REMC for work plan items.
  • Calculates estimated construction cost and estimated revenue, as well as general costs for members and prepares and delivers cost estimates promptly.
  • Create, write, & file easements for work plan items as required.
  • Create subdivision layouts and estimates. Oversee all subdivision projects and contracts.
  • Confers with local County, City and State Highway departments and coordinate outside consultants to minimize service interruption and member inconvenience in the safest manner possible.
  • Attend monthly utility coordination meetings
  • Approve field change order requests. (BCREMC and contractor crews)
  • Utilize NISC staking products to update the mapping systems as needed from work orders and new services.
  • Act as backup for Key Accounts and economic development opportunities.
  • Write and oversee basic switching orders for projects
  • Perform basic coordination, distributed generation, voltage drop, flicker and power quality studies utilizing various engineering models
  • Performs system inspections which will include examination/documentation of pole-line condition, asset inventory, GPS data collection, pole tagging, joint use contacts and ROW condition assessment.
  • Perform and manage large scale joint use assessments and make ready projects
  • Program settings into special equipment as determined by Director of Engineering and Technology
  • Inspections of special equipment and testing requirements
  • Perform various work order audits and as built inspections
  • Serve on outage investigation team
  • Act as mentor for Field Engineer I and provide support with troublesome members
  • Serve as backup for Field Engineer I.
  • Oversee daily operations of Scada system and maintenance of field communication equipment
  • Joint use assessment and make ready for large scale projects
  • Act as dispatcher/birddog during major storms
  • Lead outside contract crews during major storms
  • Serve as an on call supervisor in after hour's rotation
  • Other duties as assigned by Management.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Two Year Associates Degree
  • Preferred minimum of five to eight years' experience in Field Engineering on an electric distribution system.
  • Ability to listen, understand problems, and communicate solutions in person, electronically and over the phone with members, customers and employees to explain operations related issues.
  • Ability to handle emotionally charged situations in a controlled manner.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written or oral instructions.
  • A proficiency in the English language and its proper usage. Knowledge of a second language is a plus for this position.
  • Ability to present information effectively in small group situations to members, customers and other employees of the organization.
  • Must adhere to Company Safety Rules.
  • Must be able to travel overnight for training when necessary.
  • Must be able to drive and maintain a current Indiana driver's license.
  • Must be able to apply engineering theory to the design of electric distribution lines.
  • Must have successfully completed staking certification course.
  • Must be knowledgeable with NEC, NESC, and local electrical codes.
  • Experience with GPS, field staking software and ESRI.
  • Must be able to understand GIS, mapping terminology and surveying concepts.
  • Must be able to interpret system maps, engineering drawings and staking sheets.
  • Must have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn other software programs, as needed.
  • Must demonstrate ability to learn and apply basic computer, technical and mathematical skills.
  • Must be able to operate, maintain and safeguard expensive engineering tools and field equipment such as iPad, GPS unit, transit, laser range finder, and range poles.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills.
  • A positive attitude and pleasant demeanor to both members and coworkers.
  • Ability to multi-task and work well with others in a fast paced environment
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires that the individual spend most of the day out of the office meeting with members, visiting job sites and travelling in a vehicle. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

Frequently – see, talk, hear, walk, sit, stand, use hands to finger, handle, type, feel and reach with hands and arms.

Occasionally – stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, crawl, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate when working in the office areas, and usually moderate when working in the outdoor environment.
