Lao Family Community Development, Inc. (LFCD) is a community development non-profit agency established in the City of Richmond in Contra Costa County in 1980. Today Lao Family has expanded its operations and service footprint to two additional counties including Alameda and Sacramento. LFCD’s headquarters office is in Oakland, CA. It delivers programs and services from 7 locations in 35 languages. The agency provides community development real estate facilities and a diverse array of workforce, education, and human services that directly support predominantly low-income US-born high-barrier families and individuals, refugees, immigrants, transitional-age youth, seniors, and other special populations such as individuals with disabilities.

Job Summary: We are seeking a passionate Youth Intern to help design and lead our Youth Ambassadors Program. The ideal candidate will have personal experience with mental health challenges or have lived with someone who has faced such challenges. This role involves coordinating and facilitating our Youth Mentorship Peer Support Group, planning and promoting our annual Youth Conference, and leading initiatives to strengthen young individuals' leadership and peer advocacy skills.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with the program team to design and lead the Youth Ambassadors Program, ensuring it meets the needs of participants and aligns with our mission.

  2. Coordinate and facilitate the Youth Mentorship Peer Support Group, providing mentors and mentees guidance, support, and resources.

  3. Plan, promote, and prepare for the annual Youth Conference, ensuring a successful event for 100 attendees. This includes organizing logistics, securing speakers, and engaging participants.

  4. Promote the Youth Ambassadors Program and the annual conference through various channels, including social media, community partnerships, and youth networks.

  5. Provide training and mentorship to youth participants, helping them develop their leadership and peer advocacy skills.

  6. Offer support and guidance to peers experiencing mental health challenges, connecting them with appropriate resources and services.

  7. Gather feedback from program participants and use it to continuously improve the program's effectiveness and impact.

  8. Effectively demonstrate an ability to take direction from management departments and staff in a project-oriented team environment.

  9. Fulfill job responsibilities in a timely and professional manner.

  10. Maintain confidentiality of corporate communications

  11. Other duties assigned by the Health and Well-being supervisor and coordinator

Requirement and Qualification:

  • A candidate who is between the ages of 18 to 24 and preferably bilingual in Dari, Farsi, and Pashto

  • Self-starter, able to work with minimal supervision, and multi-task in a highly demanding work environment.

  • Strong public speaking, verbal, and written communication.

  • Proficient in computer skills: Excel, MS Word, database, PowerPoint, and Internet Explorer.

  • Personal experience with mental health challenges or supporting someone who has, combined with a passion for youth empowerment, strong leadership, and excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, with experience in event planning or program coordination, and an understanding of peer support and crisis intervention strategies.

  • Must pass a background check.

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and work on the computer; use hands to handle or feel and talk or hear; move objects up to 25 pounds.

Compensation: This is a temporary part-time position with an hourly wage of $18-$20 for 3 months between June and September 2024.
