Washington DC United States Samaritan Ministry Full time
Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington (SMGW)
Position Description: Development Director
Reports to: Executive Director

Who We Are
SMGW is a non-profit organization committed to empowering program participants to realize significant and positive life changes through the Next Step program. The heart of Next Step is casework/coaching, STRIVE employment readiness training, and Adult Basic Education (ABE). Program team members partner with participants to set goals and remove barriers to achieve them - largely but not exclusively in areas of employment, housing, health, and education. For 38 years SMGW has had a diverse team comprised of full-time paid staff and part-time volunteers who are as committed to change-work with individual participants as they are to community change-work through deliberate collective action to end systemic racism and achieve socio-economic and racial equity for all. While we are faith-based, we have no religious requirements for participation or employment.

Position Summary
SMGW seeks an experienced full-time professional to serve as Development Director (DD) to engage and empower donors, volunteers, and staff in our shared mission through gifts of time, talent, and treasure. In consultation with the ED, the DD oversees all fundraising activity including individual giving, corporate sponsorship, grant-writing, event planning, and planned-giving. While the ED is directly involved in many of these areas, such as individual donors, the DD oversees the process and is directly involved as well, depending on how the labor is divided. The DD coordinates the design and execution of our key two fundraising events and oversees for identification, preparation, and submission of grant requests. The DD leads a 5-person staff team, co-leads the Development Committee with the Chair, and serves on the Management Team.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as staff leader for the Development Committee Chair and proactively engages the Committee to empower the organization to expand its fundraising reach and impact within and beyond our donor base.
  • Serves on Management Team, receiving and offering counsel on the overall direction, strategy, and staffing of the organization, particularly from a development point of view.
  • In partnership with the ED, the DD represents SMGW to partner churches, schools, corporations, and other audiences, particularly but not exclusively in terms of development needs, challenges, and opportunities for new and current contributors to apply their time, talent and/or treasure.
