Overview:

Kingsbridge Heights Community Center (KHCC) is a 50 year old multi-service

not-for-profit organization based on the settlement house model and located in the

Bronx. We provide resources for Bronx residents from cradle to career to advance

education and well-being for a vibrant community. KHCC serves over 5,000 families

annually with an inclusive environment for children with special needs, low-income

families, recent immigrants, survivors of sexual and domestic abuse, and at-risk teens.

KHCC helps participants overcome adversity and develop the skills they need to build

bright futures.


The Youth Mental Health Advocate is an entry level position for recent high

school graduates who are undecided about college, but interested in learning about

youth development programming and human services work. The ideal candidate has

some experience with near-peer mentoring, or is willing to work with kids and teens in

an after school program setting, even those youth that are close in age. Weekly

scheduling will be during the afternoon and evening based on each site’s distinct needs;

Advocates may be placed in any of KHCC’s three after school program settings, i.e. the

Main Site or at the JFK or Walton Educational campuses.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

● Lead or support groups of 10-15 youth participants from 6th-12th grades through

a full schedule of daily after school programming.

● Provide a positive, safe, fun and memorable experience to all participants and

families involved in the program.

● Plan and implement age appropriate and creative activities across themed based

areas such as sports and recreation, leadership, STEM, outdoor education,

literacy and the arts.

● Collaborate with fellow team members and support staff, including directors,

Work Learn Grow students, Graduate Interns, the KHCC garden coordinator and

activity specialists.

● Work with the directors and other staff to develop theme based hands-on lesson

plans and project based activity ideas

● Apply positive youth development principles, age appropriate behavioral

intervention, and conflict resolution skills when appropriate.

● Assist program participants with developing social-emotional learning skills

through group based check-ins and team building activities designed to foster

trust and openness in group settings.

● Assist and supervise participants during snack and meals, and other

unstructured social and recreation times, including off-site trips and monthly

events.

● Attend weekly team meetings, orientation, and training as scheduled

● Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor/s.


Physical Demands:

● While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit;

handle, or feel; talk, hear, smell or taste. On rare occasions it may be necessary to move quickly,

run, etc. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with

hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The

employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25

pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this

job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.


Schedule:

● 20 hours /week + as needed. Mo/Tue/Wed/Th: 2:30 pm – 7:30 pm, Fri: 2:30 pm –

7 pm + Different work schedule as agreed during full-day camps when schools

are closed (one week in February and one week in April)
