Key Responsibilities of the Human Resources Manager:

  • Develop and implement recruitment strategies to attract top talent for non-attorney positions, including sourcing candidates, conducting interviews, and coordinating with hiring managers
  • Oversee the compensation structure for non-attorney employees, ensuring competitive and equitable salary packages that align with industry standards and internal policies
  • Design and execute training and professional development programs for non-attorney staff to enhance their skills, performance, and career growth within the organization
  • Manage the onboarding process for new hires, including attorneys, to ensure a smooth integration into the firm. Oversee the exit process for departing employees, conducting exit interviews and ensuring compliance with separation procedures
  • Foster a positive work environment through effective employee relations strategies, including providing counseling, mentoring, and handling disciplinary actions as needed
  • Develop and implement succession planning strategies, with a focus on identifying and preparing legal assistants for future leadership roles within the firm
  • Supervise and participate in the administration of employee benefits programs, ensuring compliance and maximizing employee engagement
  • Manage the renewal process for non-benefit-related insurance policies, ensuring adequate coverage and cost-effectiveness
  • Lead the HR department, overseeing the work of docket clerks, file clerks, receptionists, and other support staff to ensure efficient and effective operations
  • Coordinate and manage secretarial tasks, including scheduling meetings, taking minutes, and ensuring that all requests for assistance are promptly addressed
  • Support the executive committee and partnership with administrative tasks such as preparing agendas, taking minutes, and coordinating schedules
  • Evaluate and negotiate vendor contracts to ensure favorable terms and cost savings for the firm
  • Prepare and manage the annual budget for general ledger accounts, ensuring accurate forecasting and financial planning
  • Contribute to the annual ALA Benefits & Compensation Survey by providing accurate and timely data
  • Lead and manage various HR-related projects, some of which may require consultation with outside legal counsel, including: development and updates of Non-Exempt & Exempt Employee Handbooks, creation and maintenance of job descriptions, drafting and issuance of offer letters, formulation and review of arbitration agreements
  • Identify and integrate new technologies to enhance and streamline HR processes, such as: recruitment systems, onboarding processes, employee evaluation methods


Qualifications of the Human Resources Manager:

  • Degree or Certificate in Human Resources or a related field is preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and PDF programs
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic, capable of working independently and as part of a team
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail
  • Skilled in multitasking with strong follow-up and follow-through abilities
  • Excellent critical thinking skills for processing information and resolving issues
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working in a law firm is preferred
