In media and marketing, it’s the perfect skill. 


Marketing and advertising are much sexier titles, but really, they are all the same thing: sales. Sales is nothing more than marketing, and marketing is nothing more than communications. But Sales requires you to ask people to do business with you. Scary Even tho learning sales opens many doors, no one is going to school for it.

Making that ‘ask’ is much easier when you can ethically support what you represent, but rejection certainly comes with the territory, regardless of the industry. Most business people do not eagerly wait for a salesperson to call them. However, every company needs people who want to enthusiastically represent them, even journalism outlets. 


Our Media Sales and Marketing role does not look like most. First, we have an award-winning, in-house design and marketing agency. Be prepared to go back to school all over again. It really is intensive what you will learn on the job here. This link is a sampling:

Next, our widget is journalism. Unlike most products, it’s a public good. Understanding the why of that mission is critical to working in journalism, even when you are the sales and marketing coordinator.

Cool, so I get to learn a whole bunch about marketing, design, and strategy? Absolutely, but only if you are willing to put the energy into learning it. We offer the knowledge freely to those willing to receive it. However, becoming an expert takes an investment of time and energy. We also want you to have a deep passion for authentic journalism and stellar design – because we do. It’s literally required to work in Independent Media.

We recently received a grant to help pay for this role in part. Our goal is to quickly grow it to full time, but that absolutely depends on your desire to grow as well.


THE ROLE

The role is part-time, three days a week. Starting pay is $20.00 an hour, with ‘sooner rather than later’ opportunities for pay advancement and earning commissions. There are additional perks through our house accounts. The office is in Erie, but we service Boulder County. The job is in person. 


You will be expected to assist the Publisher through a variety of tasks:

  • Database entry
  • Emails
  • Dropping off packets
  • Learning Design
  • Learning how to put together a Growth Objective Calculator
  • Learning how to write proposals
  • Aiding on social media
  • Helping organize YS house events
  • Helping the publisher with collections
  • Additional opportunities on weekends working YS booths at summer events
  • And learning how to do sales calls and appointments.


We have found that with approximately 6 months of training, an entry-level person can successfully move into the Account Executive role, where you begin to earn commissions for your contributions and the hourly.
