The Associate Director of R&D for the O’Keeffe’s Brand is responsible for leading a team of formulation scientists and partnering with the commercial team to drive the innovation strategy for the brand. This role will manage the development of formulation and process for new products, ensuring new products align with consumer needs and preferences, and provide strategic thought leadership to enhance the brands product offerings.

This role requires technical expertise in formulation and processing in cosmetic and OTC products, problem solving capabilities and hands on project work and daily coaching. We are expanding globally and this role will play a key role in qualifying the production of our products globally. Additional responsibilities of the team include cost savings, demo development for sales and support at sell in meetings. As a member for the R&D Leadership Team, this person has fully developed oral and written communication skills and is developed to anticipate and communicate key issues and drive decisions with appropriate communication to key stakeholders.

What will your day look like?

  • Manage R&D team or 3 formulation scientists and lab technician. Coach and train junior members of the R&D organization
  • Provide technical expertise for product, process and capability development
  • Partner with commercial team to develop and drive innovation strategy and lead upstream technology efforts
  • Partner with global sales in selling our fantastic products to retailers with compelling demo’s, competitive analysis and buyer training
  • Lead or manage cost savings and product improvement efforts related to formulation and product performance
  • Provide technical leadership in the qualification of global supply chain to support the product pipeline and manage supplier relationships with technical counterparts.
  • Partner with clinical and regulatory teams in development of claims
  • Partner with quality and production for in house production efficiencies
  • Participate and provide technical direction in legal review of new formulas
  • Responsible for lab, including testing strategies, lab procedures and equipment needs
  • Manage department budget
  • Travel requirement: 10%, including global travel for qualifications



What you bring to the table:

Education:

  • B.S. in Chemistry, Polymer/Materials Science or related field and at least (10) years of relevant experience in personal care categories. Advanced degree preferred.

Specific Skills:

  • At least 10 yrs. experience as a R&D cosmetic formulator, with strong knowledge base of chemistries and formulation methods in the areas of emulsions, surfactant systems and anhydrous formulas, including lab bench to pilot to production scale.
  • Proven experience in leading and managing a team of scientists.
  • Demonstrated success in driving consumer-led innovation and product development.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient in process development and able to optimize formulation processes.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and quality standards for cosmetics and OTC.
  • Innovative mindset with a strong focus on consumer needs and market trends.
