Construction Attorney

Seattle, United States Legal.io Full time

Legal.io is working with a leading software company seeking to engage an experienced Construction Attorney on a contract-basis, full time (40 hours per week), for 12 months. This will ideally be an on-site role in Seattle/Puget Sound, though the company would also consider candidates in Redmon, WA or remote if the candidate has requisite qualifications.

Client Exposure: The Contractor will work directly with the Americas business team, which is responsible for the design, construction, and procurement of equipment for data centers and substations in the Americas region.

General Expectations:

  • The Company requires an attorney to support large scale data center construction projects in the Americas region.
  • The Contractor must be capable of working independently and have relevant construction experience and expertise in the Americas region.
  • The company's center construction scope has grown significantly in recent years and will only continue to grow.
  • In order to support the growth of the business and customer needs, we are focused on moving fast and efficiently, providing clear and concise guidance to our business teams, and streamlining and scaling legal and contracting processes.
  • We are staffed leanly, so we depend on our Contractors to work with us as an extension of our in-house legal team to help us achieve those goals.
  • The Contractor will work directly with business teams (i.e., legal department clients) with minimal oversight from in-house counsel. We therefore need the Contractor to fully own issues and projects, escalate as needed, and find efficient ways to keep us updated. We expect our Contractors to stay ahead of their business clients, see the big picture, act as facilitators, communicate effectively, be innovative and flexible, set reasonable deadlines capable of meeting business needs, and work efficiently to accomplish tasks in a timely manner.
  • Our Contractors need to provide the highest quality legal expertise in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Top performing Contractors provide pragmatic, commercial advice that helps us solve business problems, rather than telling us the letter of the law or why we can’t do something. They take ownership of our business problems and work as hard as we do to develop practical legal solutions to solve them; check in as needed and don’t let something sit if they were expecting to hear from us and didn’t; and keep their business clients updated on the status of their projects.

Scope of work:

  • Be the main legal point of contact for regional teams for all construction-related legal inquiries.
  • Advise on and help to resolve construction-related issues and claims in the applicable region.
  • Independently negotiate construction and architecture/engineering contracts for the applicable region.
  • Manage regional construction outside counsel.
  • Participate in legal construction training for clients.
  • The Contractor will not be developing business trainings, drafting new contract templates, or providing country-specific legal advice.

Qualifications

  • Substantive Law Experience: The Contractor should have at least 5 years of experience advising on construction-related issues at a top international law firm or in-house at a technology, construction, or real estate company. In-house experience is preferable.
  • The Contractor should also have experience negotiating engineering and construction contracts.
  • Must have an active license to practice law.
  • Fluency in English required; Fluency in Spanish preferred
  • Prior experience counseling on data center infrastructure also preferred.

Desired Start Date: As soon as possible.

Proposed Contract Length: 12 months

Expected Hours/Week: 40 hours

Location: Seattle or Redmond, WA or Remote

Time Zone/Working Hours: 0800 to 1700 in the time zone local to the resource.

Pay Rate: $97 - $116 / hr
