We are looking for a Chief Operating Officer, who will be charged with building and leading the business side of the company to ensure smooth day-to-day operations and resource management. A strong candidate will have 10+ years of experience in consumer businesses, ideally including several years in ecommerce and in startups. This is a leadership role, and prior experience on a leadership team is preferred, along with hands-on experience across a range of functions. We want to see comfort with balancing both analytical and creative thinking, high-level strategy and detailed execution. We are not looking for previous experience in publishing or bookselling, but the person in this role should enjoy reading and be excited about the mission of creating a business that will create more scale and opportunities for high-quality, creative, cultural products.

Responsibilities:

  • Be the champion of the business strategy and model by applying, enforcing and thoughtfully testing, learning and iterating on it over time and across all business activities
  • Recruit and onboard initial team members across all non-editorial functions including marketing, ecommerce management and design
  • Oversee all business functions, providing with more hands-on participation as needed, and providing guidance and coaching to team members on an ongoing basis
  • Establish and oversee function-specific and cross-functional goals, reporting, workflows and deadlines
  • Act as the primary P&L owner, creating and sharing regular business forecasts and budgeting, reporting to investors, maintaining the team’s alignment on progress towards OKRs
  • Collaborate with the editorial side of the company to ensure that the business influences editorial decisions, and editorial decisions are valued and supported by the business functions
  • Continuously analyze business performance in order to identify areas of opportunity and potential growth, to learn from initiatives that have not worked, identify areas of risk, and guide team members in the process of adapting
  • Play a critical role in business development, including identifying new business opportunities, building partnerships, and expanding the company's reach
  • Help to establish a company culture that values testing and learning, open and informed discussion, rule-breaking, and the close collaboration between business goals and creativity


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, an MBA or equivalent is a plus
  • 10+ years of operational experience in consumer businesses, with at least 5 years in consumer startups
  • Must have an entrepreneurial mindset and enjoy figuring out how to solve problems in new ways
  • Must be highly analytical with strong comfort modeling concepts and reporting on performance
  • The ability to think creatively (aesthetically and in terms of problem solving) is a strong plus.
  • Must have experience working in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment.
