Special Information:

This position is a year-round fisheries technician position located in Billings or Livingston. Work will be focused within the upper Yellowstone River and Bighorn River basins, including work in the Shields, Boulder, Stillwater, Shoshone, and Clark's Fork Yellowstone basins. Work will be generally focused on field duties May through September with more office, lab, and coordination work through the rest of the year. Work will be focused on Yellowstone cutthroat trout conservation projects and will range from working on the mainstem Yellowstone River to small headwater streams to high-elevation mountain lakes. Hours during the field season can be variable based on duties and location of activities, while work the rest of the year are more indicative of a typical work shift.

Position will be based out of Billings or Livingston. Billings is the largest city in Montana and an economic and cultural hub of the area. Livingston is a gateway to Yellowstone National Park and is approximately 30 miles east of Bozeman. Both communities lie on the banks of the Yellowstone River and are gateways to abundant outdoor recreational opportunities.

Job Duties:

This position serves as a senior-level fisheries technician assisting the Yellowstone cutthroat biologist and regional fish staff with native fish conservation activities. Duties will include:

·Plan and coordinate field sampling activities with the cutthroat biologist and regional fish staff.

·Responsible for overseeing operation, purchasing, maintenance, repair, assembly, and testing of a variety of field equipment including electrofishing units, vehicles, boats, outboard motors, and specialized fisheries survey and inventory equipment.

·Entering, summarizing, analyzing, and ensuring quality control of ecological and biological data and assist with report writing to inform management decisions.

·Supervising and training permanent and seasonal field workers, interns, and volunteers in fisheries management, sampling skills, equipment operation and maintenance, laboratory techniques, and policies.

·Overnight travel, including remote camping during the field season.

·Operation of fish sampling equipment and gears, including backpack electrofishing units, gillnets and trap nets and occasionally operate jet, propeller, and manually operated watercraft on various waterbodies.

·Lifting and carrying heavy objects, up to 75 pounds, on uneven terrain or in water. Must be able to carry heavy packs for several miles.

·Work in and around water in adverse and hazardous conditions and inclement weather.

·Regular interaction with the public, including landowners, anglers and hunters who have conflicting issues and concerns.

·Database management and data analysis, report writing, and lab work.

·Frequent interactions with partner agencies (e.g., USFS, BLM, USGS, DNRC, DEQ) and local organizations (e.g., watershed groups, Trout Unlimited) as well as private landowners, anglers, agricultural producers, recreational floaters, and commercial business owners.

·Completing work as part as a member of a team and complete tasks with minimal supervision.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·Ability to develop, plan, and prioritize projects in coordination with biologists, managers, and agency partners.

·Knowledge and understanding of fish sampling, laboratory, and field operations will be required.

·Knowledge and experience with computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and data storage and analysis with statistical applications is required.

·Ability to navigate and orient in back country settings is required.

·Must have good organizational skills and ability to accurately collect, record, and summarize data.

·Applicants must demonstrate an ability to work with professional biologists, other research assistants, and the public.

·Good oral and written communication skills are required.

·Applicants must be knowledgeable and familiar with safe operation of equipment, including watercraft, four-wheel drive vehicles, and fish sampling equipment.

·Knowledge and understanding and/or experience using piscicides for fish management is desired.

Qualifications:

·The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are typically attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in fish biology, fish and wildlife management, ecology, biology.
