Special Information:

The AIS Prevention Specialist manages the AIS watercraft inspection supervisory staff and ensures the implementation of the AIS watercraft inspection and decontamination program. This position makes sure all considerations are integrated into the ground operation following statewide fisheries management plans. The AIS prevention specialist is responsible for implementing prevention actions identified in the Montana Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan ensuring all aspects of the Prevention operation are as effective and efficient as possible. This position is also responsible for rapid response preparedness in concert with the Prevention Coordinator, Bureau Chief, and fisheries divisions’ plans for action due to any new infestation of aquatic invasive species within Montana.

Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary. Job Duties:

The AIS Prevention Specialist is responsible for ensuring on the ground operations of the AIS Prevention Program operate as effectively and efficiently as possible. This position supervises 5 AIS area supervisors who manage or oversee up to 200 seasonal staff operating watercraft inspection stations around the state. The AIS Prevention Specialist supports watercraft inspection operations including:

·Coordinating and supervising watercraft inspection station supervisors. Works closely with human resources to ensure all needed paperwork is completely in a timely and organized fashion related to hiring, disciplinary action, end of year termination, all PAR’s, and payroll.

·Coordinate and ensure all fleet, credit card, and travel vouchers are completed timely and are accurate.

·Coordinate with station supervisors and partner operated stations concerning equipment needs, maintenance, and repairs are well known and addressed. Manage the distribution of all equipment needed for station operations including but not limited to paperwork, tablets, Mifis, manuals, and more.

·May be involved in procurement, contracts, or leases.

·Coordinate and evaluate training efforts for area supervisors and inspectors.

·Evaluate station operations and logistics for improvement.

·Create opportunities for growth within your team.

·Support data management and WID mobile application for effectiveness.

·Review QAQC implementation with AIS coordinator and area supervisors.

·Support improvements in inspection station protocols and reporting.

·Support AIS outreach.

·Preparedness for rapid response efforts.

·Supports AIS coordinator with Law Enforcement at stations.

·Works closely on mussel fouled vessels.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

Working conditions involve outdoor work, at times in inclement weather. Employee may encounter hazardous working conditions requiring long hours in the field. Travel to meetings, including out-of-state travel, will require extended travel away from home.

·Understanding of Montana laws associated with fish and wildlife transport and importation.

Education and Experience:

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, Fish and Wildlife Management, Aquatic Ecology, or closely related field and at least 2 years of job-related experience to include Aquatic invasive species management, fish and wildlife management, watercraft inspection management, and staff supervision. Computer software training required, including Excel, MS Word, and Access. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Position requires experience managing a watercraft inspection program and strong supervisory and staff management skills.
