Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located at Sauvie Island.

This is a full-time seasonal position from September 1, 2024 through February 15, 2025 (These are estimated dates. Length of season(s) may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project’s control).

The goal of this recruitment is to fill these positions at the Fish & Wildlife Technician (FWT) level. However, we encourage candidates to apply for the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level ($3,218 - 3,948/mo.), as the department may consider under-filling the positions.

Did you know:

• We offer full plans with employees paying either 1-5% of their rates

• You will start out accruing 8 hours of sick and 8 hours of vacation leave per month, with your vacation leave accruals increasing every 5 years

What you will do:

• Issues daily permits to hunters, checks hunter bag and identify sex, age, species of harvested waterfowl, records hunter data; Answers public information requests in person and by phone; Check hunters’ license stamps, permits, and report violations to the Oregon State Police or Columbia County Deputy; Patrols area by foot and vehicle to insure compliance with wildlife area regulations and gather harvest data during hunting seasons; Picks up hunting permits deposited at self-service check stations and records data; Cleans check stations and restocks supplies as needed; Performs preventive and corrective repairs using hand tools as well as power equipment on buildings, equipment and grounds as needed

• Patrol Wildlife Area for Fee Hunt Compliance. Inform OSP or Columbia Co. Deputy of violations which occur and provide detailed information concerning violation which includes vital information pertaining to the suspect, vehicle, arms and location. Maintain Fee Hunt records which entail correlating over 1200 hunter records into summarized data usable for reports and compliance tracking system and completing the final Fee Hunt Report for submission to Wildlife Area manger and Wildlife Division. Coordinate the transport and release of pheasants for Western Oregon Fee Pheasant Hunt from E. E. Wilson Wildlife Area to Sauvie Island Wildlife Area. This involves the planning of routes and preparing for adverse weather and traffic conditions to protect both ODFW equipment and the pheasants

• Assists in the completion of monthly reports and other special reports as needed. Assists in completing annual reports and federal aid work plans. Furnishes a Weekly Report of Operations for supervisor in a punctual manner.

Working Conditions
• Frequently required to work outside during inclement weather, long hours, before sunrise and after sunset, on weekends, and irregular (flexible) work schedules. Requires lifting heavy objects of 50 pounds (or more with assistance if/when necessary). Dealing with the public, local residents, and other agency personnel are frequent and a well-developed sense of diplomacy is necessary. Experience in the use of hand and power hand tools

• Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified or uncertified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist.
