Duties

As the Maintenance Worker in this position, you will:

Conduct annual maintenance of recreation and administrative sites including repairs to facilities needed because of age, weather, flooding, normal use, and vandalism. Maintenance includes roofing repair or replacement; repairing or replacing door and wall surfaces; repairing or replacing fences, posts, barriers, signs, bulletin boards, and kiosks; repainting or staining buildings and other structures; repairing plumbing in buildings, potable water systems, and irrigation systems; repair roads and parking lots by repainting striping, filling potholes, and installing and maintaining speed bumps; repairing trails by installing cribbing on hillsides, resurfacing tread material, and building trails and stairs from natural materials. Perform landscaping duties to include mowing, weed abatement, spraying of herbicides and maintenance of vegetation restoration project sites including planting, seeding, and the installation and operation of supplemental irrigation systems etc., as necessary to keep recreation sites and facilities in good condition and safe for public use. Complete or assist with maintenance of equipment used in these and other duties. Incumbent operates various types of equipment including heavy-duty 4X4 pickups, forklift, mower, motorized weed-eater, ATV UTV, skid-steer loader (with a variety of attachments), and a hydraulic dump trailer.

U.S. Citizenship required. May be required to complete background investigation. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. You cannot hold an active real estate license, nor can you have an interest or hold stocks in firms with interest in Federal Lands. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Please follow all instructions carefully; errors or omissions may affect your rating. This is a testing designated position (TDP) under the DOI Drug Free Workplace Program. The Incumbent must be able to satisfactorily pass a physical examination. The incumbent must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The incumbent must be able to obtain certifications to operate the following equipment: backhoe, tractor, forklift, skid-steer, dump truck, and commercialmowers.

Qualifications

There is no required length of time of qualifying experience or training. However, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to support the SCREEN-OUT Element of: Your ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) Conducting plumbing, carpentry, painting and concrete repairs of structures and kiosks; (2) Assembling and installing fireplace grills, picnic tables, information kiosks, signs, and exhibit structures; (3) Applying paint coatings using standard methods e.g., brushing, rolling and spraying, using pre-mixed paints and stains, two-part epoxies, and weather protective coatings; (4) Removing broken concrete, preparing subsurface for repair, mixing, preparing and pouring concrete in accordance with specifications; and (5) Repairing facility plumbing needs including, but not limited to, vault toilets, faucets, drains, hot water heaters and drainage systems.

Physical Demands: Field operations are a major component of this position with duties often requiring driving and/or operation of a variety of equipment and vehicles to include the performance of difficult and sometimes physically demanding repairs. The physical ability to carry moderate loads, hike over rough terrain, climb steep slopes, drive a 4X4 truck pulling a trailer, operate equipment, and use power and hand tools. The work requires walking, stooping, bending, lying flat and repeated lifting. The incumbent must have good vision, reaction reflexes and depth perception. Physical demands require coordination for hand, eye and body. The incumbent must exert physical effort related to actions such as lifting (10-100 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying objects of various weights, sizes and shapes, walking, climbing, crawling and bending.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in all kinds of environments from an office setting to project sites in rough and steep terrain. Field work involves vehicular and foot access and may involve accessing remote areas. Temperatures may range from near zero to over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Weather may include periods of rain, snow and heavy winds. Wearing of the authorized BLM uniform is required during field work, and weekend work will also be required. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while servicing and operating equipment.
The incumbent is required to follow all prescribed safety practices, for use and wear of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while working with noisy equipment; using power and hand tools; when using chemicals and paints in cleaning, whitewater rafting or boating, and other maintenance and construction activities. Work involves some duties that may put employee in proximity of noxious gases and fumes, and it is expected that incumbent will wear PPE such as respirators while conducting these tasks and use positive ventilation to reduce risk and in the performance of doing construction work sometimes involves working high above ground level.
