Research Computing advances scientific discovery by providing computational tools to PNNL’s scientists and engineers to accelerate their research outcomes. We provide services, expertise and support to researchers to optimize their use of our capabilities (e.g. Computing Infrastructure, Systems Design, Operations and Cloud Deployment Support, High Performance Computing (HPC) Consulting, etc.). We support computationally enabled science by providing researchers access to computational building blocks (e.g., High Performance Computing, Machine Learning environments, Data Management Tools etc.). all while fostering a culture of computing through interdisciplinary collaboration and access to computational resources.

We are seeking a proven Cyber Security Engineer with broad experience to join the existing team in providing Networking and Cyber Security Engineering in support of a diverse range of research projects. In this role, you will be responsible for implementing superbly architected custom solutions while meeting Lab and Sponsor cyber security and operational policies. Scope of these activities will include defining baseline configurations, designing security controls, implementing intrusion detection/prevention solutions, various firewall architectures, and appliances. These solutions will leverage public and private cloud infrastructure, and on-premise hardware, for local and wide area solutions. You will be part of the team that architects, designs, maintains and support various environments supporting many projects and missions of the various Laboratory sponsors.

Additional responsibilities include: 

Applying engineering, technical and operational principles to the design and development of cyber security infrastructure, networks, and tools.  Building and simulating network and cyber security test ranges, leveraging Infrastructure as code such as Terraform, automation tools such as Ansible, and software defined networking (SDN) solutions.  Planning and conducting projects after analysis of functional and operational requirements.  Reviewing network and cyber security architectures for sponsor sites, liaising with vendors/contractors and negotiating toward the optimal solution for the sponsor organizations.  Consulting with and leading cross-functional teams.  Developing proposals and ideas for additional opportunities  Liaising and presenting with executive leadership at various sponsor sites.

Designs, deploys, and operates systems, networks, applications, and tools that underpin cyber security and cyber defense. Provides integration of hardware, software, and other components to solve operational challenges for cyber defenders. Performs data and systems engineering functions to support cyber operations activities and systems. Engineers and deploys security and defensive countermeasures and controls. Ensures system security needed in operations are assessed, established, and included in design and development; executes security requirements definition, systems analysis, systems design, security hardening, security test and evaluation, and certification and accreditation. Supports operational systems and performs activities such as vulnerability scanning, network, and system security configuration, etc. Design and architecture of new approaches, methods and techniques for cyber defense and resiliency for information technology and operational technology systems and networks. May interface with external entities including law enforcement, intelligence and other government organizations and agencies


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR- MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR- PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Currently holding a Q Clearance
Expert level hands on knowledge of designing, operating and troubleshooting solutions leveraging products from industry leaders like Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, Arista, & Microsoft Expert level hands on experience with standards-based routing protocols – BGP, OSPF, EIGRP and routing protocols – IPv4, and IPV6 Expertise in securing and monitoring IPv4 and IPv6 networks Expertise in building virtual solutions using hypervisors from VMware, Microsoft, RedHat KVM, QEMU Expertise in operating firewalls and remote access solutions from Cisco, Palo Alto Experience with containers – Docker and Kubernetes, and with Infrastructure as Code solutions such as Terraform, and automation tools such as Ansible and Powershell Familiar with configuration baselines (CIS Benchmarks, DISA STIGs) Familiar with Cloud technologies (Azure, AWS)
