Job Summary: The Labor Relations Specialist is responsible for managing and supporting the relationship between the organization and its unionized workforce. This role involves interpreting and administering collective bargaining agreements resolving labor disputes and ensuring compliance with labor laws and regulations. The Labor Relations Specialist works closely with HR leadership management and union representatives to foster a collaborative work environment and promote positive labor relations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) Administration:

    • Interpret and administer the terms of collective bargaining agreements ensuring consistent application across the organization.
    • Provide guidance to managers and HR teams on CBA provisions including grievance procedures work rules compensation and benefits.
    • Assist in the negotiation of CBAs including preparing proposals conducting research and participating in bargaining sessions.
  2. Labor Dispute Resolution:

    • Manage and resolve labor disputes including handling grievances mediations and arbitration cases.
    • Conduct thorough investigations into employee complaints and grievances gathering evidence and interviewing relevant parties.
    • Prepare and present cases in grievance hearings mediations and arbitration proceedings.
  3. Union Relations:

    • Build and maintain positive relationships with union representatives and leaders to foster collaboration and address issues proactively.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact between the organization and the union facilitating communication and addressing concerns in a timely manner.
    • Monitor union activities and assess their impact on the organization providing insights and recommendations to HR leadership.
  4. Compliance and Legal Guidance:

    • Ensure that all labor relations practices comply with federal state and local labor laws and regulations including the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and others.
    • Work closely with legal counsel to address complex labor relations issues and mitigate potential legal risks.
    • Prepare and submit required labor relations reports and documentation to regulatory agencies as needed.
  5. Training and Support:

    • Develop and deliver training programs for managers and HR staff on labor relations topics including CBA administration dispute resolution and labor law compliance.
    • Provide coaching and support to managers on how to effectively manage unionized employees and handle labor relations issues.
    • Ensure that employees and managers are aware of their rights and responsibilities under CBAs and labor laws.
  6. Data Analysis and Reporting:

    • Analyze labor relations data including grievance trends arbitration outcomes and employee relations metrics to identify patterns and areas for improvement.
    • Prepare reports and presentations on labor relations activities outcomes and recommendations for HR leadership and business stakeholders.
    • Use datadriven insights to continuously improve labor relations practices and processes.
  7. Employee Relations:

    • Collaborate with HR and management teams to address employee relations issues ensuring a fair and consistent approach.
    • Promote a positive work environment by supporting initiatives that enhance employee engagement satisfaction and retention.
    • Provide guidance on disciplinary actions terminations and other employee relations matters ensuring compliance with CBAs and labor laws.
  8. Continuous Improvement:

    • Stay current with industry trends best practices and emerging issues in labor relations.
    • Participate in professional development and training to enhance labor relations skills and knowledge.
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of labor relations programs processes and tools.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Human Resources Labor Relations Business Administration or a related field; Masters degree preferred.
  • 35 years of experience in labor relations HR management or a related role.
  • Strong knowledge of labor laws regulations and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Proven experience in handling labor disputes grievances and arbitration cases.
  • Excellent communication negotiation and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills with the ability to use data to drive decisionmaking and program improvements.
  • Proficiency in using HRIS systems and labor relations tools.
