Job Description

The rapidly growing Advancement Division seeks a Financial Specialist to join the staff to uphold the division's mission to support Virginia Tech's strategic initiatives. Advancement Division is responsible for the strategic process by which alumni, donors, and prospects are identified, engaged, cultivated, solicited, recognized, and stewarded to establish relationships and raise resources. Advancement is responsible for promoting the welfare of the university by cultivating a mutually beneficial relationship between Virginia Tech and its growing worldwide community of alumni, friends, and partners. The division is responsible for the dissemination of information, strategic communications, and counsel, and for the execution of private fundraising and engagement initiatives on behalf of Virginia Tech.

The Financial Specialist will assist with finance and payroll functions with a focus on processing payment requests, performing reconciliations, journal entries, bimonthly wage payroll actions for hiring, onboarding and processing terminations, monitor the timeliness and accuracy of transactions and transfers, monitor prompt pay status to meet the University's prompt pay requirements, report and handle facility related issues, and is responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant federal, state, and university policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in accounting, business or applicable discipline or significant experience.

Experience in performing financial responsibilities while maintaining and reconciling expenditures using ledgers of accounts.

Strong communication skills and experience interacting effectively with diverse groups.

Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft applications for database management using electronic spreadsheets.

Experience in prioritizing tasks and working on your own while performing multiple tasks.

Ability to learn, update and maintain new software/applications quickly, accurately, and efficiently.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and handle confidential materials and information.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong knowledge of accounting principles.

Demonstrated experience in Banner or similar large database.

Demonstrated experience in MicroStrategy or similar data analytical tool.

Demonstrated experience in HokieMart or similar purchasing program.

Understanding of the Commonwealth of Virginia accounting guidelines.

Demonstrated experience/knowledge in budgets and reporting.

Demonstrated deposit reconciliation experience.

Demonstrated experience supervising workflow processes.
