The Arthur J. Morris Law Library at the University of Virginia School of Law seeks a service-oriented, collegial, and intellectually curious professional to join our research and reference team as a Foreign, International, and Comparative Law (FCIL) Librarian. This is a Professional Research Staff position with the classification of Research Scientist reporting to the Law Library’s Assistant Director & Head of Research Services. The FCIL Librarian will join a highly skilled team of law librarians in providing sophisticated research support for faculty, students, and staff; research instruction to students; and reference assistance to members of the public. The FCIL librarian will also be the primary voice in the curation and maintenance of the FCIL library collection and Foreign and International website pages.

A strong service orientation and the ability to develop effective and collaborative relationships with colleagues and patrons are essential. The successful candidate will be someone who can work effectively and efficiently on independent and collaborative projects, is adept at handling multiple projects concurrently, and thrives in a friendly but fast-paced environment. The candidate will have excellent communication skills and will be adept at conveying complex information in a succinct, clear, and timely manner. They will be proficient with standard office and library software applications and able to rapidly incorporate new technology into research methods and workflows.

Responsibilities:
FCIL Collection Development. Serves on the Law Library’s collection development committee with primary responsibility for evaluating FCIL materials.
Supervise the FCIL library assistant.
Serve as library liaison for LLM and SJD students, as well as one or more of the student-run journals at the Law School.
Participate in the rotating reference schedule for both in-person and online reference services. Reference services can involve substantial legal and non-legal research for Law School faculty and staff, consultations with students, and guidance to public patrons.
Serve on Library, Law School, and/or University Libraries committees and project teams.
May teach, co-teach, or assist with teaching for-credit classes such as FCIL legal research classes or Advanced Legal Research. Previous instructional experience is helpful; however, the Law Library’s teaching team will support new and developing teachers.
Support library operations and administrative projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or foreign equivalent. Degree must be completed by the start date.
ALA-accredited MLS degree or foreign equivalent. Degree must be completed by the start date.
Substantial legal research skills, including in U.S. legal research, with knowledge of legal information systems and sources.

Preferred Quali fi cations:
FCIL experience.
Collection development experience, particularly with FCIL materials.
Supervisory experience.
Written and oral proficiency in one or more foreign languages.

The preferred start date for this position is as soon as possible but is negotiable. Salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors. Minimum salary is $75,000.

This position requires most work to be performed in person at the Law School, with the opportunity to perform a limited amount of work remotely in accordance with Law School policy.
