Job Title: Foreign, Comparative, and International Law Librarian

The University of Virginia School of Law is seeking a highly skilled and service-oriented professional to join our research and reference team as a Foreign, Comparative, and International Law (FCIL) Librarian. This is a Professional Research Staff position with the classification of Research Scientist reporting to the Law Library's Assistant Director & Head of Research Services.

About the Role

The FCIL Librarian will be responsible for providing sophisticated research support for faculty, students, and staff; research instruction to students; and reference assistance to members of the public. The successful candidate will be someone who can work effectively and efficiently on independent and collaborative projects, is adept at handling multiple projects concurrently, and thrives in a friendly but fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • FCIL Collection Development: Serve on the Law Library's collection development committee with primary responsibility for evaluating FCIL materials.
  • Supervise the FCIL library assistant.
  • Serve as library liaison for LLM and SJD students, as well as one or more of the student-run journals at the Law School.
  • Participate in the rotating reference schedule for both in-person and online reference services.
  • Serve on Library, Law School, and/or University Libraries committees and project teams.
  • May teach, co-teach, or assist with teaching for-credit classes such as FCIL legal research classes or Advanced Legal Research.
  • Support library operations and administrative projects as assigned.
Requirements
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or foreign equivalent.
  • ALA-accredited MLS degree or foreign equivalent.
  • Substantial legal research skills, including in U.S. legal research, with knowledge of legal information systems and sources.
Preferred Qualifications
  • FCIL experience.
  • Collection development experience, particularly with FCIL materials.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Written and oral proficiency in one or more foreign languages.
