Job Title: Staff Attorney, Innocence Project, University of Virginia School of Law

The University of Virginia School of Law is seeking a Staff Attorney to join the Innocence Project team. As a Staff Attorney, you will play a critical role in supervising law students who work on wrongful conviction cases in Virginia.

The Innocence Project at the University of Virginia School of Law is a leading organization in the fight against wrongful convictions. Our team works tirelessly to identify, investigate, and litigate cases of wrongful conviction, and to advocate for policy reform.

As a Staff Attorney, you will be responsible for supervising student teams working on individual cases, overseeing the investigation and litigation process, and assisting with efforts to raise public awareness of wrongful convictions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise student teams working on individual cases
  • Oversee the investigation and litigation process
  • Assist with efforts to raise public awareness of wrongful convictions
  • Manage student teams working on policy and reform issues
  • Work with clinic directors on other litigation matters as needed

Requirements:

  • J.D. from an ABA-approved law school or foreign equivalent
  • Active membership in a state bar in good standing (VA bar admission preferred)
  • Able to travel domestically, mostly in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with evening and weekend work as needed
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant practice experience as an attorney or summer intern
  • Work for an Innocence Project or criminal post-conviction clinic while in law school

This is a one-year restricted position, renewable for up to two additional years, subject to performance and continuation of funding. The position offers a competitive salary and benefits package.
