Position Summary & Responsibilities

The position (K0241125)

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a Data Abstraction Coordinator opening in Topeka. This position will gather reports related to violent and overdose deaths including, but not limited to the following: death certificates, coroner and medical examiner reports including toxicology, law enforcement reports, notes to files, and official press releases. Formal requests for reports will be based on individual incident/victim requirements and made by email, fax, phone call, in-person meetings, and through access to systems such as DIDI. Use a follow-up system for effective turn around on receipt of requested information and contact reporting parties to discuss any missing information or discrepancies in documents. Secure and maintain confidentiality of all reports from receipt to destruction, which will occur based on Bureau of Health Promotion policy.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:  

Perform abstraction of data related to violent and overdose deaths in Kansas into the CDC SAMS National Violent Death Reporting System Web adhering to deadlines set by CDC and guidance outlined in the respective coding manuals for the Kansas Violent Death Reporting System and State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System (SUDORS). Support excellence in data entry and promote quality improvement through participating in regular training and CDC technical assistance workgroups as well as re-abstraction of a minimum of 10% of violent and overdose death incidents.

Support overall goals, objectives, and activities for the Kansas Violent Death Reporting System and State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System. Provide support for reporting to CDC and other stakeholders. Contribute to response for error reports and validation requests from CDC. Participate as a collaborative team member with KSVDRS and OD2A surveillance and prevention activities to maximize data system efficiencies and facilitate use of data.

Qualifications

Education : High School, GED Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State. Minimum Qualifications: High School, GED. Experience in law enforcement, public health, medical field, or another related field. Preferred Qualifications: Skills in data entry. Good communication skills verbally and in writing. Experience with large databases. Proofreading, editing, attention to detail. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
