The Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) has an excellent opportunity for a highly-skilled and motivated student Intern 

The compliance intern would help support the AMA conservation programs team, the annual reporting processes, reviewing water exchange contracts, helping with all aspects of regulatory compliance, internal processes and procedures of compliance, helping write briefs, maintain a compliance log, and other ad-hoc items.

This role will help ADWR's efforts to ensure compliance with the 1980 Groundwater Code, the management plans, and other applicable groundwater statutes, policies, and procedures. This intern will work closely with the AMA conservation programs team and the annual reporting coordinator to monitor, research and enforce compliance standards.

This position will also assist in the research and analysis of state and federal water conservation laws and regulations. This position will help support the drafting and review of documents sent to the public, to compliance, and to the legal team at ADWR. It will also participate in the development of training materials on compliance procedures for AMA staff.

This internship will contribute to the evaluation of the conservation programs and annual reporting for compliance with the Arizona Revised Statutes and the management plans. 

Schedule: Hours may vary up to 40 hours per week.

Job Duties:

Key Responsibilities:

Interactive Reporting:

Assist with hard copy reporting during ADWR’s reporting season. Support in sending reminder letters to right holders about their annual reporting requirements. Encourage and guide water users to utilize the online reporting platforms, especially ADWR’s Online Annual Reporting Tool

Data Management & Public Records:

Help in enhancing the availability of public records on the ADWR website. Assist with well queries, pumpage queries, imaged records, and the utilization of interactive mapping tools. Support ADWR’s initiative to expand the scope of the annual reporting tool by adding more water rights and authorities.

Community Engagement and User Support:

Engage with water users to provide them with access to their own information on the ADWR platform. Aid in educating users on how they can leverage ADWR tools and information to better manage their water portfolio and ensure compliance with regulations. Address queries from the public, helping them navigate the resources available on ADWR’s digital platform. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Desired Qualifications:

A foundational understanding or willingness to learn about the Groundwater Code, ADWR rules, permits, management plans, and reporting requirements. Familiarity with web-based tools or an eagerness to understand and promote their use. Strong written and verbal communication skills. An analytical mindset, with attention to detail. Teamwork and strong interpersonal skills. Interest in data management, user support, and promoting digital transitions. Selective Preference(s):

Candidates must be enrolled in school and pursing a degree in Environmental Sciences, Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Sustainability, or a similar field, or related field.
