Job Summary:

The Hydrogeologist Intern will support the team's hydrogeologists by assisting coordination efforts with regulatory agencies and private entities, reviewing groundwater withdrawal permits and Notice of Intents (NOIs) to drill, abandon, replace, deepen, or modify a well applications.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with the 1980 Groundwater Code, minimum well construction standards, and protect human health and the environment by preventing vertical cross-contamination.
  • Learn about well construction, well abandonment, and vertical cross-contamination and plume migration issues near groundwater contamination sites.
  • Work closely with the lead hydrogeologist by assisting with drafting memos, reviewing permits and NOIs, and studying well impact analyses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Foundational understanding or willingness to learn about the Groundwater Permitting and Wells Section's processes, rules, permits, etc.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical mindset, with attention to detail.
  • Teamwork and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret aerial imagery and topographic maps.
  • Ability to review historic documents and translate information into a spreadsheet or database format.
  • Ability to perform field work.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in school and pursuing a Hydrology degree.
  • Self-driven and motivated to learn about hydrology and places a high value on safeguarding the health, safety, and economic welfare of the public.
