Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Birth Certificate Coordinator at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
  • Accurately gathers and inputs all required data for electronic birth certificates (EBC).
  • Ensures correct information is reported to the Social Security Administration for the issuance of Social Security numbers to newborns.
  • Collaborates with the State to correct any problems or changes to the electronic birth certificate
  • Maintains all birth, morbidity and mortality statistics and reports.
  • Prepares standard and ad-hoc computer reports and maintains related statistics
  • Obtains physician signatures and/or certification as required for all certificates
  • Sends required documentation of all births to the local registrar and State timely
  • Generates Fetal Death Certificates for funeral homes
  • Safeguards sensitive medical information and follows strict procedures in handling confidentiality of data pertaining to patients
  • Assists with routine secretarial duties as needed
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned
  • Adheres to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior
  • Lifts a minimum of 25 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 25 lbs and stands a minimum of 1 hour a day.
Qualifications
  • High school Diploma or GED is required
  • Completion of a Medical Terminology course Preferred
  • Previous experience as a Unit Secretary in a hospital setting Preferred
  • Proficiency with medical vocabulary and general understanding of hospital policy & procedures. General computer skills, including order entry and basic proficiency with Microsoft Office, are required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. You must enjoy working with patients and their families, and be both flexible and adaptable in adjusting to changes in patient population and volume. The ability to accept responsibility for accuracy and response times is critical.
