The East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Center for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology will offer a full-time 4 th year AuD externship providing the full range of diagnostic services in an interprofessional university clinic with a cochlear implant and implantable devices focus.

The ETSU Center for Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology is housed within the ETSU Nave Center – a growing interprofessional clinic. The 4 th year extern will be exposed to a variety of clinical settings and activities across the scope of audiology practice including adult and pediatric diagnostics, adult and pediatric amplification, electrophysiology, tinnitus, auditory processing disorder, and vestibular assessment. This externship will have a specific clinical focus on the ETSU Cochlear Implant Clinic, which currently serves over 300 patients across the lifespan. Externs are expected to participate in a variety of learning activities, including presenting at monthly Case Conference meetings, participate in community health events, and assist in clinical lab teaching. This a temporary position, filled annually with no opportunity for renewal. This position includes limited benefits. Benefits will be program-specific and outlined in the program contract.

Externship site expects the extern to have mastered these skills before they begin their clinical externship:
•Experience in completing full diagnostic hearing assessments for adults and pediatric populations using the appropriate testing method and equipment for the patient type, diagnosis, and reason for referral

•Knowledge of hearing aid programming software for fitting amplification devices and hearing aid verification

•Ability to make earmold impressions and knowledge and skill necessary to perform in-office repairs and modifications on earmolds and hearing aids

•Organization skills are necessary to maintain accurate electronic medical records related to patient care

•Proficiency in otoscopy, middle ear analysis, otoacoustic emissions, pure tone testing/masking, ability to determine validity of test results, formulate treatment plans, and counseling properly on test results

•Knowledge of or experience with cochlear implant management and osseointegrated technologies

•Experience with implantable candidacy evaluations

•Experience working with an interprofessional team Externship site expects the extern to learn/demonstrate these skills during their clinical externship: Hands-on experience will be gained with range of clinics/techniques including: ETSU Cochlear Implant Program (Pediatric and Adult Evaluations and Mapping), ETSU Balance Clinic (Evaluations and Treatment in conjunction with Physical Therapy), Electrophysiology, Tinnitus, Osseointegrated Technologies, Hearing Aids and Adult/Pediatric Diagnostics. Additional expectations will include presenting at monthly case conference, participating in community outreach events, and assisting with clinic labs Clinical opportunities that will be given to the extern:
