Job Description

Our company is currently seeking an experienced synthetic chemist, scientific leader, and collaborator to join the Discovery Chemistry Department at our West Point, PA site. The successful candidate will join multidisciplinary, highly collaborative discovery teams to invent novel medicines by innovatively applying high-throughput experimentation, parallel medicinal and synthetic methods, automation, advanced analytical techniques, in-silico tools and data analysis to enable rapid, efficient SAR exploration and the design and synthesis of drug candidates and intermediates. Candidates must possess excellent synthetic chemistry skills, a proven track record of delivering on objectives, strong leadership and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Specific responsibilities of this role may include:

  • Leading highly collaborative capability teams to establish and/or apply novel approaches to enable the drug discovery process.
  • Creative leveraging of deep knowledge of synthetic methods, cheminformatics and cutting-edge high-throughput experimentation techniques including parallel synthesis and reaction screening to rapidly solve key chemistry problems of the high complexity
  • Integration and optimization of workflows with automation robots and high-throughput analytical systems
  • Act as a leader in the laboratory, overseeing and executing on program and c hemistry strategy with an emphasis on synthesis and method development.
  • Serving as a mentor, scientific supervisor, and/or manager to junior staff within our organization, and proactively partaking in recruitment, training, and development of scientific talent. Serving as a scientific leader and role model for West Point Discovery Chemistry within the broader global Discovery Chemistry organization.
  • Maintaining a proactive and visible external scientific presence including authoring significant scientific publications, presenting at key scientific conferences, and/or chairing high-impact scientific sessions.

To accomplish these goals, the successful candidate should have the following minimum qualifications, and required skills and experience:

Education Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. in chemistry with a minimum of 8 years of industrial or academic experience in HTE and/or drug discovery

M.Sc. in chemistry with minimum of 10 years industrial or academic experience in HTE and/or drug discovery

B.S. in chemistry with a minimum of 14 years of industrial or academic experience in HTE and/or drug discovery

Representative experience and skills:

  • Track record of leading collaborative drug discovery or capability teams to scientific breakthroughs with demonstrated ability to set and/or realize scientific strategy.
    • Deep scientific expertise in modern approaches to medicinal chemistry, including but not limited to synthesis, high throughput experimentation, modality selection, and the application of state-of-the art capabilities.
    • Experience in assimilating complex data sets and applying predictive tools and structure-based drug design toward the design of new drug candidates.
    • Expertise in applying creative and modern synthetic approaches toward novel drug candidates, including contributing to collaborations with external partners.
    • Expertise in modern design of experiments to optimize reaction methods utilizing platforms such as Library Studio and Virscidian.
    • Experience in parallel synthesis methods and application of library approaches to medicinal chemistry is preferred
    • Experience with modern cheminformatics tools, computational tools and other scientific software such as Spotfire, Stardrop, and MOE for drug discovery is preferred
    • Experience with high throughput synthesis systems, analytical systems and with operating and programming automated platforms including liquid handling robots is preferred
    • Experimental experience and thought leadership in synthetic approaches to hybrid modalities is preferred.
  • Awareness of key scientific and technological advances in drug discovery from the external scientific environment.
  • Track record of solving complex problems with an ability to multitask across diverse responsibilities.
  • Track record of effective training and mentoring of team members in synthesis and drug discovery.
  • Strong scientific track record documented through publications, inventorship, and presentations at scientific meetings.
