IB Design Teacher - Grades 5-8

We are seeking a dynamic, creative and passionate Design Teacher to join our team International Baccalaureate(IB) learning community. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable of the IB Primary and Middle Years Programs, a strong background in design and design thinking and knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards. They will possess excellent communication skills, and a commitment to fostering creativity and innovation in students. This position provides a unique opportunity to empower students to become creative problem solvers, future designers and changemakers.

Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development: Design and implement a dynamic and hands-on curriculum that integrates design thinking, innovation, and entrepreneurship concepts with a focus on social impact.

Collaboration: Meet weekly with colleagues to generate opportunities for interdisciplinary units of inquiry and alignment. Create opportunities to learn how to use the lab equipment.

Instruction: Deliver engaging lessons that stimulate creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among students. Use a variety of teaching methods and resources to accommodate different learning styles.

Equipment Maintenance: Learn and maintain the tools in the lab: 3D printers, laser cutter, Cricut, and woodworking equipment. Teach students to safely utilize the equipment in their designs.

Project-Based Learning: Facilitate project-based learning experiences that challenge students to identify real-world problems and develop innovative solutions using design principles and entrepreneurial strategies.

Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to students as they work on design projects, encouraging them to explore their interests, take risks, and pursue their ideas with confidence.

Community Engagement: Foster connections with local organizations, businesses, and community leaders to provide students with opportunities to apply their design skills in real-world contexts and make a positive impact in their community. Assessment and Feedback: Assess student progress and performance via PYP assessments, MYP rubrics and NGSS standards in a variety of ways, including project presentations, portfolio reviews, and peer evaluations. Provide constructive feedback to help students improve their designs, entrepreneurial ventures, and conceptual understanding.

Promotion of Ethical Design Practices: Emphasize the importance of ethical considerations, sustainability, and social responsibility in the design process. Encourage

students to approach their projects with empathy, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to making a difference.

Professional Development: Stay current with trends, research, and best practices in design education, entrepreneurship, and social innovation. Continuously seek opportunities to enhance your own knowledge and skills in these areas.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in design, education, entrepreneurship, or a related field.

Previous teaching experience, preferably in Design, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), or project-based learning. ? Strong understanding of design thinking methodologies, entrepreneurial concepts, and their application in social innovation.

Proficiency in design software and design lab tools.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate students from diverse backgrounds.

Flexibility, creativity, and patience.

Exceptional collaboration skills.

Proven record of success working with 5-8th grade students.

Preferred Experience

At least two years experience teaching middle school students

Previous experience using design based hardware like laser cutters, 3D printers, or woodworking tools.
