What you will do – Essential Responsibilities

  • Actively work with Tech leadership in supporting company-wide initiatives and lead efforts that will solve tech-wide problems and ensure Teams can move quickly and deliver on the needs of the business.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in design, product management, and systems architecture to develop experimental solutions and bring great ideas to life
  • Influence direction within the organization that contributes to the Carmax Strategic Plan, offering innovative ideas that contribute to building win-win solutions through continuous feedback and partnerships with your peer and the leadership team.
  • Partner with all levels of leadership to continually evolve the platform and its operations using solid engineering and agile practices.
  • Stay on top Industry trends and lead the Organization in new ideas, processes, and best practices to continuously improve what we do and ensure our customer experience is the best it can be.
  • Display high level leadership skills, being able to drive the overall vision of the organization.

Purpose of the role

As a Principal Engineer at Carmax, you have a strong passion for Technology and continuous learning. You are respected as a master of your craft, throughout the Organization and within the Technology Industry. You work closely with leaders throughout Technology and the Business to drive strategic initiatives at Carmax and solve complex problems. As a technical leader, you empower and encourage engineers to push beyond their limits and to continually focus on their growth and learning new technologies. You are a Tech representative within Carmax and within industry forums, where you continually share your knowledge with others through Blogs, White Papers, speaking at conferences or events. You are a self-starter.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Decision Science, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent alternative education, skills, and/or practical experience is preferred.
  • 10+ years of work experience required in Network, Cloud Network, software engineering disciplines, and/or other areas directly relevant to Network/Cloud/Automation responsibilities and tasks, multiple certifications preferred.

Specific Qualifications and Requirements

  • 5+ years of working in and building Infrastructure within a cloud platform - Azure (preferred) and Akamai
  • 4+ years scripting or coding experience with one or more languages related to Network Automation
  • 4+ years' experience in Routing, Switching, Firewall and WiFi
  • Deep technical experience in infrastructure, build and deployment, including private and public cloud, networking, network automation, connectivity, virtualization, and access control
  • Experience leading engineering efforts or process improvements across multiple teams
  • Implementation of Azure networking for enterprise organizations, building of hybrid environments to span existing customer networks and Azure
  • Demonstrable experience with a range of cloud capabilities including but not limited to virtual networking, network automation, virtual machines, access management and automated deployments.
  • Demonstrable experience solving complex problems within the cloud and legacy networks for all areas of Technology
  • Demonstrable experience building and deploying resilient architectures
  • Demonstrable experience in influencing and driving change successfully within the organization
  • Actively educates others in cloud concepts and various areas of Infrastructure
  • Strong attention to detail, Expert level problem investigation and diagnostic skills
  • Passion for eliminating repetitive manual processes using automation
  • Advanced wireless skills working in a large enterprise environment

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the Richmond, VA CarMax Technology Innovation Center or the Dallas, TX Technology Hub and have a Hybrid work arrangement

Work Authorization: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will be considered for this specific role.
