Summary

Fabricate various precision parts, models, and tools from raw materials using precision blueprints and all Sheet Metal shop equipment and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read work orders, follow production and sample assemblies, diagrams, part lists or receive verbal instructions regarding duties to be performed.
  • Interface with engineering to establish best procedures for the build and manufacture of all assemblies associated with the finished product.
  • Set up all sheet metal equipment and perform intricate close tolerance fabrication.
  • Ability to understand and read precision measuring equipment.
  • Measure parts to determine specified tolerance.
  • Read and interpret blue prints to fabricate complex parts.
  • Fabricate parts from raw materials.
  • File and buff parts to fit.
  • Drill, tap, ream, countersink, and spotface bolt holes in parts.
  • Position and align parts.
  • Lap and hone internal cylindrical surfaces.
  • Sound understanding of military and commercial workmanship standards
  • Must have expert knowledge of all basic machine shop equipment and tools including lathes, mills, drill press, power hack saw, surface grinders, shears, brakes, CNC punch press, rollers, and all basic hand tooling operations.
  • Examine, troubleshoot and diagnose all types of mechanical fabrication problems, and determine solutions and appropriate corrective action as necessary.
  • Must be willing and able to assume work assignments away from the facility for extended periods-of-time for site installations and be willing to work rotating shifts.
  • Ability to program and run basic and advanced CNC Punch Press operations.
  • Ability to proficiently operate additional machinery not normally associated with job specific expertise. (I.E. Machine operator with shear, brake, and punch press experience.)
  • Must be able to work from parts lists, assembly drawings, schematics, engineering orders, engineering change orders, engineering logs, CAE workmanship standards and CAE manufacturing procedures / work instructions.
  • Basic computer skills are required for time reporting and work order processing.
  • Ability to perform work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess personnel set of Precision Layout/measuring and hand normally associated with a machinist.
  • Manage and order raw material needed to completed shop orders by reviewing part blueprints prior to start of fabrication.
  • Manage and order the tooling for machines as needed to maintain the operation capability of the machines.
  • Manage the training for new fabricators on any machine in the shop.
  • Validate that preventative maintenance is being completed on all machines, that all machines are signed off and if any machine is not singed off as being completed, they would then ensure the maintenance is completed
  • Ensure the shop is maintained and cleaned as required by company policy/work standards and if any area is not completed, they would then be responsible to make sure it is cleaned
  • Determine job order based on current priority list based on machine availability, in stock raw material, complexity, and direction from group lead on schedule requirements
  • Determines the jobs assignments for other fabricators
  • Set up machines for junior level fabricators
  • Is the main point of contact for all fabrication questions, specifically in regard to the capability of the shop, how something can be made, and can provide or get status on all items in the shop as requested.
  • Joins, fabricates, and repairs metal and other welding material by applying appropriate welding techniques.
  • Interprets blueprints, work orders, specifications, diagrams or schematics to determine appropriate welding process.
  • Responsible for the study of prints, drawings and specifications to complete finished welds and lay out of tasks using specialized computer welding equipment.
  • Welding on all types of metal including titanium, nickel alloy and aluminum.
  • Perform mechanical set-ups and changeovers for all welding operations.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • 8+ years experience in sheet metal techniques, machining techniques, equipment and procedures
  • High school diploma or general education degree.
  • Post high school vocational training or certification strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated manual dexterity, proven mechanical aptitude, ability to perform any and all advanced level sheet metal operations, ability to read and interpret Mechanical blueprints, ability to be sensitive to schedule, expert understanding of tools and specialized equipment (shears, brakes, punch press, rollers, etc.)
  • Must be able to work from parts lists, assembly drawings, schematics, engineering orders, engineering change orders, engineering logs, CAE workmanship standards and CAE manufacturing procedures / work instructions.
  • Basic computer skills are required for time reporting and work order processing.
  • Ability to perform work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess personnel set of precision layout/measuring and hand tools normally associated with a machinist.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to figure percentages, area, circumference, and volume and apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Welders shall be qualified or able to be qualified in accordance with requirements of AWS D17.1 Section 9 for non-flight hardware for the following materials and weld types: Aluminum with material thicknesses ranging from for GTAW, AC, Vertical-up, Carbon steel with material thicknesses ranging from for GTAW, DC, Vertical-up. The qualifying weld types are Sheet Groove (1G, 3G), Tube Groove (1G), Sheet Fillet (1F, 2F, 3F), Tube Fillet (1F).

Must comply with all company security and data protection / usage policies and procedures. Personally responsible for proper marking and handling of all information and materials, in any form. Shall not divulge any information, or afford access, to other employees not having a need-to-know. Shall not divulge information outside company without management approval. All government and proprietary information will be accessed and stored electronically on company provided resources.

  • Incumbent must be eligible for DoD Personal Security Clearance.
