Job Summary

WebBank is seeking an accomplished and dynamic Vice President of Software Development to lead and inspire our talented development teams. As a key member of the technology leadership team, you will be responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of high-quality software that drives the business forward. You will provide strategic direction, technical expertise, and exceptional leadership to our frontend, backend, and data teams, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

The ideal candidate will possess a proven track record of designing and building highly secure, compliant, performant, resilient, effective and efficient software using AWS, RDBMS & RDS, DynamoDB, Containers, Lambda Functions, Python, Node, and React. Player/coach mentalities are best positioned to succeed at the Bank; WebBank has a strong tradition of embracing leaders that are capable of both a) producing individual results and b) managing people. WebBank is seeking a dynamic leader with the expertise to create well-written and well-documented code, architect software solutions, manage projects, and effectively inspire and manage people.

In addition to the core competencies of software engineering (coding), software architecture, project management, and team management, the ideal candidate will possess at least one complementary competency from amongst the following disciplines:

  • AWS Cloud Engineer.
  • Data Engineer.
  • Security Engineer.
  • Database Administration.

Primary Responsibilities

This role requires mandatory core competencies related to software engineering and architecture as outlined below.

  • Expert level Python skills.
  • Git version control system, collaborative workflows, and deployment pipelines.
  • Deep understanding of backend technologies (databases, cloud services).
  • RESTful APIs and consuming external APIs.
  • WebSockets for real-time communication.
  • GraphQL for API design and data fetching.
  • TypeScript for static typing and enhanced code maintainability.
  • Serverless architecture (AWS Lambda).
  • Performance optimization techniques (code splitting, lazy loading, caching).
  • Profound understanding of JavaScript ES6+ syntax and features (arrow functions, destructuring, spread/rest operators, etc.).
  • Mastery of core concepts like variables, scope, closures, data types, and object-oriented programming.
  • Expertise in asynchronous programming (promises, async/await) and error handling.
  • In-depth knowledge of runtime environment, event loop, and module system.
  • Experience building scalable and efficient server-side applications with frameworks like Express or NestJS.
  • Understanding of RESTful APIs, routing, middleware, and authentication/authorization mechanisms.
  • Proficiency with package managers (npm, yarn) and dependency management.
  • Ability to write unit and integration tests for applications.
  • Strong grasp of React core concepts: components, props, state, lifecycle methods, hooks (useState, useEffect, useContext, etc.).
  • Experience building complex user interfaces with React components and managing component state.
  • Proficiency with React Router for handling navigation and routing in single-page applications.
  • Familiarity with state management libraries like Redux or MobX for managing global application state.
  • Understanding of component styling approaches: CSS modules, styled components, CSS-in-JS.
  • Ability to write unit and end-to-end tests for React components using libraries like Jest and React Testing Library.
  • Expertise in HTML5, CSS3, and modern layout techniques (Flexbox, Grid).
  • Knowledge of responsive design principles and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Familiarity with front-end build tools like Webpack or Parcel.
  • Experience with CSS preprocessors (Sass, Less) and CSS frameworks (Bootstrap, Tailwind CSS).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

In addition to software engineering and architecture core competencies, the ideal candidate will have additional, complementary competencies in one or more of the following areas:

  • AWS Cloud Engineer – Professional-level AWS certification(s).
  • Data Engineer – SQL Server, DynamoDB, and RDS.
  • Security Engineer – Rapid7, Crowdstrike, AWS Security Hub, etc.
  • Database Administration – SQL Server, RDS databases, and No SQL.

The role, compensation, and reporting line can be tailored to the candidate based on the universe of competencies the successful candidate possesses.

Qualifications

You Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science (or equivalent).
  • Expert-level coding skills refined from years of experience writing and debugging code.
  • One or more advanced AWS certifications (or equivalent experience): DevOps Engineer (Professional), Solutions Architect (Professional), Security, Advanced Networking, and/or Machine Learning.

Even Better:

  • Master's degree in computer science, MBA, or similar.
  • Excellent written communication skills (the Bank needs good writers).
  • Excellent diagramming skills.
  • Broad understanding of banking and financial regulatory environment and guidance like FFIEC CAT, NIST, FDIC Financial Institution Letters (FILs); audits like GLBA, ITGC, NSA, PCI; and controls like SOC 1&2; etc.
