Position Overview:

Be a part of the fastest-growing business in the art market. Masterworks is seeking a passionate and results-oriented Director, Business Development to manage a dynamic team of Art Specialists. You will play a crucial role in driving the growth of Masterworks' art portfolio by leading your team to source and secure high-quality artworks with strong investment potential. This position requires sales leadership, motivational talent, and business acumen, to leverage the team's strengths to cultivate a winning acquisition strategy.

The Director, Business Development will initially report to the COO.

Responsibilities Overview:

As the Director, Business Development, you will be responsible for:

  • Lead and energize a team of Art Specialists in sourcing artwork for the Masterworks platform.
  • Set the pace and tone for client engagement activity
  • Execute a comprehensive client management strategy that enhances relationships with galleries, auction houses, collectors, and advisors and cultivates a steady pipeline of acquisition opportunities.
  • Provide continuous training and mentorship, fostering expertise in negotiation, relationship building, and mastering CRM tools to manage client interactions effectively.
  • Set, review, and exceed team KPIs aligned with Masterworks' overall goals.
  • Improve existing processes and workflows to optimize team efficiency.
  • Cultivate a culture of continuous learning by fostering training and coaching initiatives. Focus on efficiently onboarding new hires, enhancing their sales acumen, and deepening their understanding of Masterwork's value proposition.

Requirements or Skill Sets:

  • Minimum 3 years leading a sales or business development team
  • Experience with sales management roles for high-value consumer products/services (e.g., yachts, jets, luxury goods, real estate, wealth management, insurance) or catering to high-net-worth clients
  • Direct art market experience is not required, but familiarity with and passion for the industry and Contemporary art is a big plus
  • Experience in negotiation and deal structuring.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and coaching skills.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire a team to achieve ambitious goals.
  • Proven leadership experience with a track record of building high-performing teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Strong familiarity with CRM and task management systems – Hubspot, Clickup, Monday, Asana, Airtable, etc.
  • Fast learner with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Need to be in a high-growth, fast-paced environment
