Lewiston, Maine, United States Bates College Full time

The Department of Earth and Climate Sciences at Bates College invites applications for a full time, one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Earth Materials beginning August 1, 2024. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the success of historically underrepresented, marginalized and first-generation students are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate must demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in a vigorous undergraduate program, have a good knowledge of/experience with inclusive pedagogies, and welcome the opportunity to mentor serious students and advise senior theses. Field-based and analytical projects and collaboration with departmental colleagues offer a wide range of instructional opportunities.

During the semesters, the successful candidate will teach an introductory course in plate tectonics and hazards, a 200-level course in earth materials, and an upper-level course within their field of specialty. During the spring Short Term semester (May) the candidate will teach a 3.5 week introductory to mid-level immersion course in the area of their own expertise. A full-time departmental assistant in instruction provides logistical support for the introductory laboratory.

Maine is particularly well suited for providing teaching and research in metamorphic and igneous terranes. Departmental facilities include an extensive mineral, rock, and thin section collection, powder X-Ray diffractometer, rock preparation equipment, scanning electron microscope with EDS, and a petrographic microscope laboratory. College wide facilities include a staff-supported Visualization Lab, Digital Media Studio, and GIS and mobile GIS capabilities.

We strongly encourage applications from individuals in underrepresented groups, individuals who have followed non-traditional pathways to higher education due to societal, economic, or academic disadvantages, and individuals with a demonstrated capacity to advance the college's continuing commitments to equity and inclusion. Candidates are encouraged to identify their strengths and experiences in these areas.

Qualifications

PhD preferred, ABD considered.

Application Instructions

Review of applications will begin July 5 and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit the following: a cover letter addressing interest in the position and Bates College, curriculum vitae, statement discussing teaching philosophy and experience, and a statement discussing research interests. Evidence of the candidate's past and potential contributions to equity and inclusion should be addressed either in a separate, additional document, or integrated into the teaching and research statements.

Three letters of recommendation will be requested from candidates selected for further review. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
