The Augusta VA Health Care System is seeking a strong leader who will direct our Spinal Cord Injury and Disorder (SCI/D) Center.

The VHA SCI/D System of Care is the only healthcare system in the United States that provides lifetime care for persons with SCI/D, from diagnosis to end of life care.

The SCI/D Chief will oversee full management of the Spinal Cord Injury service.

Incumbent is responsible for working with other service lines and departments to develop and maintain service agreements to ensure high quality of care to SCI/D Veterans.

Establishes and maintains a climate that fosters patient-centered services. Supports and promotes full implementation of all local, VISN and national policies and directives.


Incumbent will work cooperatively with affiliated educational institutions, while also maintaining priority alliance to the needs and mission of the VA medical center.

The SCI/D Chief incorporates evidence-based practice, best practices, and clinical practice guidelines into the appropriate medical care settings.


The SCI/D Chief reports directly to the Chief of Staff and will positively support the goals of the SCI/D Center, VA medical center, VISN 7 and VHA.

She/he maintains and promotes high ethical, clinical and administrative standards that are carried into the decision-making process.


Incumbent is responsible for developing both long- and short-term policies and plans for giving special consideration to the integration of the SCI/D Center within other service lines to ensure an interdisciplinary approach and a seamless health care system.


Makes recommendations regarding all resource management issues, including but not limited to personnel actions, budget, equipment, space, benchmarking issues, outreach, and networking initiatives.

Directly supervises clinical and administrative staff.

Supports patients' rights, high quality education programs for patients and staff, supports and monitors time and attendance of staff, and supports and ensures compliance with productivity initiatives.


Participates in medical center, VISN 7 and national SCI/D System of Care leadership activities; Manages service-level QI activities that monitor critical aspects of care that include CARF and JCAHO compliance.

The SCI/D Chief is expected to remain privileged and practicing in his/her specialty field.

The SCI/D Chief functions as liaison to Associate Chief of Staff for Education and ensures orientation to service rotation for program trainees (residents, students, fellows).

The practitioner is expected to show effectiveness in teaching, monitoring, and coordinating educational activities, and comply with necessary trainee supervision.

The Augusta SCI/D Service Line is affiliated with Augusta University and has rotations for medical students and residents.

Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Approved

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA

Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory

CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)

Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday,8:00am - 4:30pm (Subject to change based on agency needs).
