Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of scholarly publication standards for the scientific academic voice; skilled in writing concise, direct, active sentence structures that are clearly understood.

Knowledge of scientific journal author guidelines, reference, and citation formatting. Knowledge of the logical writing style that is accepted by top tier scientific publishers.

2 Years of professional editing experience with research manuscript writing.

Ability to provide direct diplomatic feedback that improves authorship.

Ability to meet multiple deadlines.

Organization, time management, and excellent diplomatic communication skills.

Effective use of digital editing software, including the Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office including Excel and Word, especially Track Changes.


Preferred Qualifications:

Professional layout desktop publishing experience with Adobe InDesign or academic project experience in InDesign with a product sample.

Bachelor's degree

Requirements:

Employment in this position is contingent upon a satisfactory Level 1 background check at no cost to the candidate.

Office hours are from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday. Eligible for part-time Telework.

Position Overview and Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

Science and copy editing:

Reviews and edits FWC authored manuscripts for succinct compelling scientific voice.

Provides suggestions throughout the manuscript on how to improve the clarity of the writing.

Points to inflated or illogical statements, jargon, and unsupported conclusions.

Edits format and style according to the author guidelines the manuscript is written for.

Provides copy editing in preparation for submission to the publishing vehicle.

Applies the rules of the Council of Science Editors where applicable e.g., professional reports.

Guidance and Instruction:

Works with the Publication Office Supervisor to prepare guides, templates, and training materials.

Communication and Administration:

Works with Publication Office Supervisor and contractors to arrange editing job queues, communicate with authors, and track publication projects.

Shares editing service jobs with other Publication Office editors; communicates effectively to accomplish this efficiently.

Professional Development:

Seeks professional development that assists authors in sustaining current best practices in authorship.

Publication Collection Preservation:

Works with library staff to digitize, archive, catalog and preserve library materials.

Library staff receive basic cross-training to help cover services when needed, including physical coverage of library.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge in using Microsoft Office365 Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Sharepoint, and Adobe Pro and Windows.

Possess good customer service skills.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to work independently.

Ability and desire to work in an extremely fast-paced, team environment.

Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.

Ability to act on changing priorities and responsibilities.

Ability to organize and manage multiple publication projects.
