Main Purpose of Job

This recruitment is for multiple positions. Under the direct supervision of nursing staff or other designated healthcare administrator, the Geriatric Nursing Assistant I (GNA I) aids in the care, treatment, habilitation or rehabilitation of aged, physically ill patients in State facilities.\r
The GNA I has additional training above the basic Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training. The focus of the GNA I training is on elder care. Certified Nursing Assistant training provides the basic tenants and scope of practice for care provided by both the CNA and GNA.\r

POSITION DUTIES

\r
Learns to assist the registered nurse, licensed nurse, and the geriatric nursing assistant II in carrying out delegated routine nursing care.\r
Provides such care and documents: activities of daily living, mobility, vital signs, intake and output etc.\r
Notifies� the licensed nurse immediately if the patient or residents' condition or behavior has changed from one day to another or from one part of the shift to another.\r
Learns to provide feedback to the nurse regarding the nurse-directed plan of care.\r
Advocates for the resident/patient by notifying the nurse of any requests for information, concerns about care and any resident/patient needs.\r
Learns to engage in opportunities for career development to enhance personal and professional growth through participation in continuing education opportunities and staff meetings.\r
Completes required training, education courses and competencies within established timeframes in order to comply with regulatory requirements.\r
Participates in continuous quality improvement.\r

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. \r
Experience: None. \r
Notes:�1. Candidates may substitute experience in the direct care of patients for the required education on a year-for-year basis for up to four years of the required education.\r

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current certificate as a Nursing Assistant with a Geriatric Nursing Assistant certification designation from the Maryland State Board of Nursing. \r
2. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training. \r

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification must successfully complete an in-service training program approved by the hiring facility within the first three months prior to permanent appointment to a position in this classification. \r
2. Employees in this classification must maintain a current listing in the Geriatric Nursing Assistant registry of the Maryland State Board of Nursing. Employment will be terminated for employees who do not maintain current listing in the registry. \r
3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call 24 hours a day and, therefore, may be required to provide the facility with a telephone number at which they can be reached. \r
4. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations , Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. \r
