Position Overview: We are seeking a dynamic and accomplished individual to serve as Chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology. The successful candidate will be a recognized leader in the field with a national reputation for research excellence and superior teaching. They will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our department, attracting and nurturing talented individuals who will become tomorrow's educators and leaders in biostatistics and epidemiology.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide visionary leadership for the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, overseeing its academic and administrative activities.
  • Maintain a thriving and collegial work environment for faculty, staff and students.
  • Foster a culture of excellence in research, teaching, and service within the department.
  • Attract, mentor, and develop faculty members who demonstrate potential for outstanding contributions to the field.
  • Develop and implement a robust mentoring program for young faculty members and students, nurturing their professional growth and success.
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaborations and initiatives both within the department, across the college and health sciences campus, and with public health and biomedical professionals, agencies and associations in the state, region, and nationally.
  • Enhance the department's national and international reputation through innovative research and scholarly activities.
  • Advocate for resources and support to advance the department's mission and goals.
  • Engage with external stakeholders, including government agencies, industry partners, and professional organizations, to promote the department's work and impact.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics, epidemiology, or a related field who is tenured or tenure-eligible at the current rank of Associate or Full Professor.
  • A distinguished record of scholarly achievement, including a strong publication record and external funding.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the graduate level.
  • Proven leadership skills with experience in academic administration and management.
  • A track record of successful mentorship of junior faculty members and students.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in implementation or supervision of online training programs.
  • Participation in development of curricula for undergraduate public health students.
  • Experience in working with an applied public health setting such as a government agency or state or local health department.
  • Active membership and engagement in relevant professional service organizations.
  • Effective engagement with the public.

About the Department:

The Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology ) is housed within the Hudson College of Public Health, Oklahoma's only accredited School of Public Health ). The College offers graduate degree programs with concentrations in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Administration and Policy, Health Promotion Sciences, and Occupational and Environmental Health. We have a rapidly growing undergraduate program in Public Health. The Department is the largest in the College and comprises 25 full time faculty and approximately 75 graduate students in MPH, MS, and PhD programs. Faculty perform active research in the analysis of longitudinal and other correlated data, survival analysis methods, clinical trials methodologies, Bayesian statistics, survey sampling methods, statistical genetics, high-dimensional data analysis, health disparities, tobacco control, communicable diseases, trauma-related health outcomes, environmental exposures and reproductive outcomes, cardiometabolic outcomes in American Indian populations and cancer prevention and control.

Due to current and future needs, the successful candidate will have the immediate opportunity to recruit Biostatistics and/or Epidemiology faculty to support the implementation of the OU Health Sciences Research Strategic Plan and the growth of undergraduate and online programs.

The Hudson College of Public Health was established in 1967 and has been continuously accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH) since 1969. We are the only accredited school of public health in Oklahoma and have a multi-disciplinary faculty in five core areas: Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Administration and Policy, Health Promotion Sciences, and Occupational and Environmental Health.
