POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for, in collaboration with the Department of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, to plan, implement, and administer all aspects of the Indigenous Education program in order to support SoWashCo Indigenous students reach their full potential through meaningful, equitable, and targeted educational experiences that affirms and values their unique cultural identities. This coordinator will serve as the primary contact promoting communication, understanding, and cooperation between the school district, the Indigenous Family Advisory Committee, and the community. Additionally, this coordinator will support Indigenous students' education by incorporating community-based cultural values. This coordinator will work closely with the Director and Supervisors of the Department of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and will be part of the Teaching and Learning Services team.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Write and manage grants for State and Federal Native American Education programs.
  2. Student contact is expected, as this position will interact with Indigenous students across grade levels to learn about their experience, determine needs, and offer specific support to these students and their families.
  3. Facilitate Indigenous district programming, including, but not limited to; community nights, classroom educational materials, professional development opportunities, and tutoring opportunities for Indigenous students.
  4. Manage, facilitate, and empower SoWashCo's Indigenous Family Advisory Committee. This includes transparent, frequent, and specific collaboration regarding budget, spending, goals, strategies, and progress toward goals for Indigenous students and families.
  5. Support actions related to educational equity.
  6. Represent DEI across departments to ensure there's a voice advocating for educational equity for Indigenous students at district and school level decision making tables.
  7. Partner with building principals, equity leadership teams, Professional Development and Teaching Learning Services Departments to develop plans and activities to consistently integrate Indigenous Education into programming and curriculum.
  8. Participate in developing, monitoring and implementing components of the Achievement and Integration Plan which are directly related to empowerment of Indigenous students and families (including programming and evaluation of services).
  9. Assist with monitoring policies regarding diversity, equal opportunity, and other issues related to DEI, specifically regarding impact on Indigenous students, families, and communities.
  10. Collaborate with Human Resources to recruit and retain high quality Indigenous employees across employee groups.
  11. Advise Director of DEI on issues facing the Indigenous community within the district.
  12. Reinforce school district partnership(s) with the Native American community.
  13. Perform home visits (in accordance with district guidelines) in order to convey information about the program.
  14. Other duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, LICENSE, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES):
Required:


  1. Requires a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in education, Indigenous Studies, social science, or a closely related field and/or equivalent experience
  2. At least one year of experience in a supervisory role in a school district or social service agency working with the Indigenous community, families, and students of the same or similar heritage
  3. An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of the work.
  4. Familiarity with Minnesota's Indigenous Community, Federal and State laws that affect Indigenous people, and tribal programs that affect SoWashCo Indigenous students and families
  5. Experience and success implementing culturally and historically responsive pedagogy and strategies.
  6. Verbal and written communication skills, including giving presentations, report writing, and grant writing.
  7. Basic skills in Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications
  8. Interpersonal skills for working with families, students, the community, and within the District.
Desired:

  1. Current Educator license (Teacher, Social Worker, Psychologist)
  2. Additional leadership licensure (K-12 administration, Education Director)
  3. Fluent in language(s) other than English
  4. Experience writing and managing grants
  5. Certificates and/or training regarding intercultural relations, cultural diversity, or other related field(s).
  6. Proven skills in designing classroom/training curriculum.
  7. Understanding of multicultural education in the areas of child and youth development.
  8. Basic knowledge of child and adult learning styles.
  9. Basic knowledge of the social history of oppressed groups in the United States.
