Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Brief Job Summary:

Assists nurses (RN and LPN) in providing the activities of daily living.

Qualifications:

  • Successfully complete a state-approved nurses' aide-training program.
  • Must understand English both written and spoken.
  • Must have current certification and registration with state department of health.
  • Must be able to perform job-related functions safely and successfully, with or without reasonable accommodation required by federal, state, or local law.

Main Functions:

  • Care for multiple residents in the facility.
  • Observe Resident Rights.
  • Provide personal care and assistance with activities of daily living.
  • Feeding; Pass and pick up food trays; serve nourishments; keep record of intake and output.
  • Transfer to and from bed or chair or other locations within the facility.
  • Keep incontinent residents clean.
  • Monitor and record bowel movements.
  • Pass and empty bedpans, urinals, and emesis basins; collect specimens such as urine, stool, and sputum.
  • Reposition residents in bed or chair.
  • Assist with personal and dental hygiene.
  • Assist in ambulation.
  • Make beds, change linens.
  • Answer call bells and make rounds.
  • Provide postmortem care.
  • Take and record vital signs, Measure and record height and weight.
  • Record activities of Daily Living on flow sheets.
  • Observe residents and note physical condition, attitude, reactions, appetite, etc. and report and changes to the nurse.
  • Use safety devices and standard precautions to prevent the spread of infection and disease.
  • Monitor dining room during mealtimes as scheduled.
  • Evacuate residents in an emergency, according to fire and evacuation policy.

Notable Functions:

Come to work as scheduled and consistently demonstrate dependability and punctuality.

Equipment Used:

Stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, scale, tray, carts, Hoyer lift, whirlpool tub, wheelchairs, walkers, canes, charts, linens, towels, standard precautions (PPE), thermometers. Urinals, bed pans, commodes, and personal hygiene supplies.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Current and valid nursing aid license in the state of practice and employment.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with other personnel.
  • Ability to relate information concerning a resident's condition.
  • Ability not to pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
  • Skill in the use ofthe sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Ability to push, pull, move and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of three feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of three feet.

It is highly likely that while performing the essential functions of this position you will be exposed to blood or bodily fluids.
